Re-cip′ro-cating-pro-pel′ler.

One having a paddle which has a limited stroke and returns in the same path. The propeller is reciprocated by a horizontal engine. It is enveloped at the sides and before, so that the water does not impinge against its forward side. The propeller is made sufficiently buoyant to raise it to position for making the effective stroke.
