τοῦ λέξαντος, not, of course, Odysseus, but simply the man from whom “ὁ κλύων” heard the story. The slander “mobilitate viget, viresque acquirit eundo” （Aen. 4. 175). As it spreads and gains in strength, the spiteful joy of each new hearer is greater than that of his informant.
