ἕως, MSS. τέως. On such a point the authority of MSS. is almost valueless. In the time of Demosthenes τέως had its own duties as demonstrative, and it is hard to believe that it could be relative as well. Later, it ousted ἔως as relative, and copyists persistently wrote the form familiar to their own age. οὐδὲν ἐπαισθάνεται, “does not notice that anything is wrong,” the sense of οὐδὲν being made clear in the following clause. κινεῖται, “is disturbed.” κἂν ῥῆγμα, κἂν στρέμμα, sc. ᾖ, not σαθρὸν ᾖ. τῶν ὑπαρχόντων, “of the system.” πόλεμος συμπλακῇ. More forcible than πολεμῷ συμπλακῶσιν, as showing that the war has the grip of them and they are likely to be thrown. ἐποίησεν. For the tense, cf. supra, § 9, ἀνεχαίτισεν.
