αὐτούς, emphatic: self-help is needed, as well as divine help

ὅπως μὴ . . . δόξωμεν. Cf. i. § 2 (note).

χείρους . . . τῶν ὑπαρχ. “Less kind to ourselves (Heslop) than circumstances have been to us,” literally than what we have already.

τῶν αἰσχρῶν, neuter. Cf. i. § 26, τῶν ἀτοπωτάτων μεντἂν εἴη.

πόλεων. Inversely attracted from acc. by the succeeding relative ὧν.
