Ἀποθνῄσκει .. διέφθειρε—‘fell after losing.’ The aor. is antecedent in time to the hist. pres., but is placed after it, and joined by καὶ as the more important member. Cf. c. 67, 3 ξυλλαμβάνει .. ἐκέλευσεν.
