Ill gotten gains.

--The efforts now making to ferret out corruptions in certain officials are bringing to light such as will readily snow how large fortunes have been speedily accumulated, and how Government and people have all been robbed for the benefit of individuals. Already the friends of the guilty parties are attempting to "whitewash" discrepancies and cover up "commissions;" but it is to be hoped that the advocates of justice will prove firm in their positions, and that naked facts will be given the light of the noon day's sun. If officers, high or low, who have been entrusted with Government. , have betrayed that confidence and enriched themselves by defrauding the Government, they should not only be exposed and rigorously punished, but Congress ought to pass an act for the confiscation to public use of every dollar of their ill gotten gains. For the disposition of such cases we should be glad to see a Dictator — a man with nerve enough to probe every charge to the bottom, with judgement sufficient to do justice, and with such resolution as would bring the guilty in ad to the block.
