Seizing Beef.
--Some of the butchers in the
Second Market made written complaint to the
Confederate authorities on yesterday, that they had sent into the
Federal lines and purchased cattle for this market, and that on reaching our lines the cattle had been impressed by
Captain Farland, for Government use, at a loss to them of about $2,000. This impressment seems to have been made in the very face of a
general order to the contrary, and we are therefore quite sure that an order will be promptly issued for their relief.
If any of our butchers have the enterprise to purchase cattle within the enemy's lines and drive them into ours, the impressing officers should encourage them; for we shall this winter need all the meat we can get to feed our armies and the people.
