Condition of the sidewalks.
--The condition of the sidewalks of our city, at the present time, is indeed shocking — in many places rendered almost impassable from the melting snow on the sunny side of the streets, to which is constantly added a fresh supply from the roofs — while on the shady side, the fallen snow has become frozen and caked into ice, so as to render it hazardous somewhat to life, and certainly to limb.
In other cities, (some, too, smaller than ours,) it is made obligatory upon occupants of buildings upon the streets to clean away, immediately after the fall of snow, the sidewalks before their doors, under the penalty of a heavy fine.
Will not our city authorities take cognizance of the matter, and if there is an ordinance in existence upon the subject, enforce it?
The labor would be small, and the comfort and convenience of our citizens as well the appearance of the city, would be greatly enhanced thereby, while it would give employment to those who are in want of it about this time.
