The alarm of fire
yesterday morning was caused by the burning of a portion of the floor of the office of the Confederate
Quartermaster General, located in Mechanics' Hall.
The fire was communicated from the grate.--Owing to a timely discovery, no damage ensued beyond that spoken of. Had the fire gotten headway it would have been impossible to save the building.
At a recent meeting of the Common Council the propriety of obtaining another steam fire engine was ordered to be enquired into.
If an additional one could be had, it would, like
Mrs. Toodles's watch-boxes, be ‘"very handy"’ to have it on hand.
It is understood that the insurance companies purposed to make the city a present of a fire engine.
They could not do a better thing.
