The gay Metropolis.

--It must have been the influence of the charming weather that made Richmond look so gay on Saturday, for nature herself was all smiles, and how could her creatures be gloomy? The ladies exhibited the irresistible attractions of pretty faces and elaborate millinery, and military gentlemen displayed the full glory of gilded stars and brass buttons. It was more like May than December, and the reflection was comforting to those who thought of the soldier boys in camp, far away from the pleasures of home. It was philosophically remarked that if such weather were to continue all winter, there would be no ice for brandy smashes next year; but while giving full credit to the author of such an original remark, we must say that it lacks point. The blasted winter will come soon enough.
