Southern manufactures

--We are happy to see that in all parts of the South manufactures are springing up as if by magic. Time will develop our natural resources, as well as the ability of the people to turn them to advantage. We have received letters from gentlemen in Tennessee, representing that the opportunities for manufacturing articles of necessity in that State are unbounded. In Virginia we are like wise blessed with the endowments of nature, and many of our citizens have turned their attention to the manufacture of articles not only of necessity, but of luxury. Let the manufacturers expand their limits and facilities, and throw out their branches until every hamlet shall resound with the clack of the water-wheel or the puff of the steam engine. Nothing but energy is required to render us entirely independent of the North, and it is in no vain boasting spirit that we say that in many branches of manufacture the South is already vastly ahead of the North.
