Violation of an ordinance.
--Yesterday the
Mayor fined
J. N. Brizzalari $10, and
John O'Brien $10 for violating the ordinance recently enacted by the Common Council " concerning houses where ardent spirits are kept for sale or given away." That part of the ordinance in which our astute city fathers speak about houses where liquor is given away, must have been inserted as a pleasant joke, if intended to apply to any of the restaurants or groceries now existing.
Knowing the enterprising nature of the keepers of such houses, the Council may have inserted it to prevent the practice of a dodge to evade the law. In this view they did well, for many a man, in former times, has given away a tumbler full of whiskey, and sold the cracker with which I was accompanied for ten cents.
