Seeking lodgings.

--Straggling vagrants from the North--many of them graduates of prisons and poor-houses — continue to find their way to this city, with the intention of "squatting" for the winter. These creatures, as soon as they arrive. make tracks for the station-houses, and if refused lodgings, tumble down in the market places and there lie until arrested by the police. The Mayor, under the authority of the City Council, has full power to gather up these pestiferous wrecks and return them to the place from whence they came, or to put them to work in the chain-gang, where they can be forced to earn their daily bread.
