Henry Harrison Hall
Henry Harrison Hall was born at
Darien, Mackintosh county, Ga., November 18, 1848.
He was educated in the common schools of
Georgia and was attending a military school in
Aiken, S. C., when the war began, the school closing on account of the war in 1862.
He made efforts to enlist in the
Confederate service, but owing to his extreme youth was unable to do so. In March, 1863, obtaining his father's consent, he went to
Charleston and participated in the fight at Battery Wagner in April following.
This was before he was mustered in, and in June, 1863, he became a private in
Mathewes' battery of heavy artillery, and after a short time was made commissary-sergeant of the battery, serving as such during the remainder of the war. He took part in the following engagements: Battery Wagner in April, and the siege of it until its evacuation in September.
He was in all of the engagements in the campaign which ended with
Greensboro, including the battles of
Averasboro and
Bentonville, N. C. After the surrender he returned to
Barnesville, Ga., and went from there to
Savannah, where he commenced the study of pharmacy, remaining there until 1867; and then after a short period of mercantile life at
Cartersville, Ga., and
Louisville, Ky., he returned to
Charleston and received his diploma as a pharmacist in 1870.
He followed that profession there until 1875, when he removed to
Aiken and has been engaged in the drug business there ever since.
He was for a long time a member of a military company and at the time of his resignation in 1894 was colonel of the First South Carolina regiment.
He was married in 1871 to
Miss E. J. Dawson, of
Charleston, S. C., and they have four children:
Huger Tudor, a physician;
Susan Felicia;
Carrie Deas, and
Charles Dawson.
He had four older brothers in the service: John Henry Hall, now living near
Savannah, Ga.: Robert Durham Hall, who served in the Third Florida infantry, was confined in
Fort Warren for a long time and died soon after the war as the result of ill treatment in prison.
Horace S. Hall served in the Mathewes heavy artillery and is now living in
Charleston, S. C. Tudor Tucker Hall served in
Mathewes' battery and is now living at
Highlands, N. C.
William D. Hall, of
Anderson county, S. C., was born in that county, February 14, 1842.
