Every year, volunteers and staff at our Youth Resource Center put on a prom for young adults experiencing homelessness. This night is a chance to feel celebrated, included, and for just a few hours, like any other teenager. We are proud to share this short film. Watch it and pass it along to the people in your life who show up for others, the ones who know that community is not just a word. If it moves you to give, now is a great time. Through the end of May, every donation is matched dollar for dollar up to $25,000 by the John C. Kish Foundation. Your gift goes twice as far and directly supports the programs and services that Salt Lake Valley residents depend on every day. Visit voaut.org to donate or hit the following link: https://lnkd.in/gMwqXbv9

What an incredible morning at our Annual Founders Day Breakfast this past Friday. VOA Utah works across three deeply connected areas: mental health, addiction, and homelessness. Progress in one area often depends on progress in the others, and that holistic approach is what helps people find lasting stability right here in the Salt Lake Valley. If you couldn't make it Friday, you can still be part of it. Through May 31st, the John C. Kish Foundation is matching every donation to our Founders Day campaign up to $25,000. Your gift goes twice as far, directly toward programs that change lives in our community. This is your chance to join our mission. Volunteers of America, Utah reposted this
One thing this conversation reinforced for me: homelessness is rarely one issue. In Salt Lake City, it’s often the intersection of housing costs, addiction recovery, untreated mental health needs, trauma, family instability, and systems that don’t always work together well. I sat down with AJ Nielsen and Dan Benshoff from Volunteers of America, Utah to talk about the realities they see every day working directly in homelessness services, recovery programs, and mental health support across Utah. A few things that stood out to me: • Recovery is rarely linear, and multiple attempts are often part of the process • Many people experiencing homelessness are families, youth, or individuals who simply lost stability faster than they could recover it • Community involvement matters more than most people realize, whether that’s volunteering, mentorship, donations, or simply approaching people with curiosity instead of judgment • Nonprofits are navigating enormous uncertainty with funding, grants, and rising demand while still trying to meet growing community needs One of the most impactful parts of the conversation was hearing how a single volunteer experience completely shifted someone’s perspective and eventually led them into nonprofit leadership and fundraising. It’s easy for these conversations to become political. This episode brought it back to something more important: people. Really appreciated AJ and Dan for taking the time to share their perspective and the work VOA Utah is doing in our community. Link in comments:
