knee, which caused the amputation of the left leg about midway the thigh. A piece of the same shell inflicted upon the gallant Captain Ward a mortal wound. Colonel Young then assumed command. The latter took occasion to pay tribute to the gallantry and sterling worth of General Ector. During most of the campaign, having but a skirmish line, and a spirited action resulted. On the night of September 1st the brigade led the advance toward Lovejoy's Station, the city being evacuated.
