5 on the town house and the schoolhouse. In 1739 £ 40 is voted for repairs, and 1748 the amount set aside for the purpose is £ 100 for the schoolhouse alone. Thus the third school building of Charlestown, which, according to our reckoning, ought to have ended its existence about this time, by a timely outlay was made to do duty for several years to come. Considerable light is thrown upon the school fund at this time. In 1727 it was itemized as follows:— Lovell's Island, let to William Walters (?), £ 17. School lot, let to Timothy Wright, £ 5. Maryland volunteers. --The first company of Maryland Zouaves, 1st Regiment, held a meeting on the 4th of July, in this city, and elected the following officers: Wm. Fines. --The Mayor yesterday fined several parties ten dollars each for violating the ordinance relative to closing the liquor houses on Sunday--among them William Walters and Mrs. McMahon. F. Kale was fined $5 for hiring a wagon without having a license.
Murder in Wythe county. --Wm. Walters, the little dwarf, who was only three feet two inches high and 40 years old, was murdered in Wythe county, Va., on the evening of the 24th ult., by a man named Roberts. It appears that they were returning together from a still house, at which place Walters had exhibited a considerable amere returning together from a still house, at which place Walters had exhibited a considerable amount of money, the desire to possess which by Roberts is thought to have led to the commission of the horrid deed. Roberts was heard to say that he had killed Walters, but pretended it was done in self-defence.
