the jury who tried him could find no other verdict than that of guilty. Before his conviction Shearer was sent for by Gen. Rosecrans while he (Shearer) was in jail at Kenosha, but the Sheriff in Kenosha county refused to give him up. Rosecrans expressed his determination to have him hung, as Shearer had been a regular spy for the rebels. Shearer was present at the battle of Corinth, and it was stated that he was drummed out of camp at that place. While in the South (Alabama and Arkansas) Shearer procured specimens of Confederate money — tens, twenties, fifties, and hundreds — and with or from there specimens he had plates made in Cincinnati, and then had hair a million struck off This was sent by a trusty agent to North and South Carolina, and there it was exchanged for Carolina and Georgia money.
