letter in the New York Tribune, dated on the 8th, says: In a dispatch last evening I mentioned the crossing of a detachment of colored troops, belonging to General Draper's brigade, to the west bank of the James river, in the vicinity of Dutch gap, and their having set about entrenching themselves in a position on the other side, where they could defend the head of the canal from rebel sharpshooters when this work shall be opened, as it can be no secret to say it now soon will be.
