ch was slow, for we wished to save our horses. We passed through the town of Frankfort, and a short distance from Lewisburgh we came to the camp of the Twenty-second, screened from view in a grove in a sink-hole. These sink-holes are one of the peculiar features of this valley, and the town of Lewisburgh is built in one. We arrived at the town at four o'clock, where the Kanawha force had already arrived. Here we learned that the rebels had kept on their flight in the direction of Sweet Springs, in. Monroe, and after passing the Green Brier had burned the bridge. After a night's rest, took up the march for the White Sulphur, the Ninety-first Ohio going with us as far as the ford of the river. On our march, we found two camps that were burning, and were designed for winter-quarters. One was on a hill beyond the town, and the other hid away in the ravine alongside of the turnpike. a contraband directed us to an extensive saltpetre works, which we destroyed. We arrived at Callaghan's at four o'clock, where we heard of the operations of General Duffie and Colonel Moore, and the retreat of Echols. We marched out on the Sweet Springs road, and encamped for the night on Dunlap's Creek. Hitherto our marches had been by easy stages, twenty miles per day, and had taken special care of our horses; but now we were in the enemy's country and the great object of the expedition before us, and our movements must of necessity be rapid. At two o'clock A. M., started for Sweet Springs, in Monroe, where, we arrived at ten o'clock, and halted for two hours for refreshment and to groom our horses. At the Springs captured a large quantity of manufactured tobacco, that was divided amongst the men, furnishing an abundant supply for a long time. Began the ascent of the mountain at noon, and in the gap captured a wagon-load of salt. The day was fine, and from the top of the

Liberty and Buford's Gap to Salem, on the Virginia and Tennessee railroad. This retrogade from our hazardous position was accomplished without loss and with but little annoyance from the enemy. From Liberty to Salem, our route lay along the line of the railroad, which we destroyed as we moved, arriving at Salem about sunrise on the morning of the twenty-first of June. After a short halt, we took the road across the mountains to the Greenbrier White Sulphur Springs, via New Castle and Sweet Springs, arriving at the White Sulphur on the afternoon of the twenty-fourth. This move into the mountains was necessary to disembarrass ourselves of the enemy's cavalry, which had overtaken and followed us from Liberty, hanging upon our rear and harassing our flanks; without doing us much actual damage, however. After we entered the mountains, they disappeared entirely, and we found ourselves at the White Sulphur with no enemy to contend with, except the natural difficulties of the country

On the 21st McCausland, always enterprising, struck him again at Hanging Rock in Roanoke country, capturing some guns and prisoners, and Hunter passed on through Craig county to West Virginia. The northern historian, Pond, says in his account of this campaign: The night of June 24th—having passed Sweet Springs—the column reached White Sulphur Springs, and there had delicious water and a good rest. Had Hunter advanced from Staunton June 8th to Lynchburg, through the mountain gaps north of the James, it is hard to tell how he could have been foiled. Had he marched as fast as Early, or been bold enough to assail after he arrived, all the chances of the war were in his favor. The following resolution was also adopted, viz: That it be recommended to each division of this district to appoint a committee of five persons, whose duty it shall be to visit from time to time the families of all persons who have volunteered or may volunteer, and see that they shall not suffer for any attention or comfort. X. Sweet Springs, Va., April 24, 1861. Yesterday evening, about 4 o'clock, a flag of Southern Independence, made and presented by the ladies of this place, was hoisted, and is now waving aloft. As it went up, it was greeted and cheered by the patriotic ladies, who were present in a goodly number. God bless those patriotic ladies, and may they have the satisfaction of seeing the proud and noble principles represented by the flag they have presented upheld by their husbands, sons, and lovers. Patriotic letter --The following is a copy of a letter written by Brig. Gen. Wise to Mr. C. Bias, of Sweet Springs, Va., acknowledging the receipt of a flag for the Legion: The Confederate flag sent me by yourself, as Secretary of the Sweet Springs Valley Guard, was received yesterday evening; accept for it my grateful acknowledgements. Waving in front of my Legion it shall guide as against the invaders of our soil, and be planted over them victoriously, or else baptized and re-baptized in blood, consecrated on the altar of Virginia and the Confederacy. Whatever be our face, no stain of dishonor shall touch it, not more for our own sakes to whom it is given, than for your sakes who give.
