This county received its name from Alexandern miners, it was called Germania. The last syllable of Spottswood's name, wood, was Latinized, and hence the name of Spottsylvania. been cut and felled across it, and it was about eight o'clock on Sunday morning May 8, 1864. before the head of Ward, secretly giving aid, in every possible way, to the enemies of the Republic but whither he knew not.
