This was believed by reliable gentlemen who arrived by the Central trath. There is nothing new from the Potomac. The enemy has retired from Falls Church, after refusing an offer of battle.

e the following interesting epistle of a young soldier, addressed to his father, from the columns of the Atlanta (Ga.) Intelligencer: Camp Near Centerville, Va., September 28th, 1861. Dear Father: I write to let you know I have at last realized my long-cherished wish. I have been directly under the fire of the enemy one time. A little over a week ago we were ordered to Munson's hill, on picket duty. After staying there four days, we moved backward a mile and a half, to Falls Church; and just as we were about leaving the latter pl for our camp near Centerville, (the 9th Georgia having relieved us from picket duty we saw couriers coming swiftly to General Longstreet's quarters, with information that the Yankees had driven in our pickets at Lewinsville, and were advancing in large numbers.
