nt for duty, 39,830. At Crump's landing, six miles distant, General Lew Wallace had a force of 5,640 men. General Nelson's division, of Buell's army, arrived at Savannah on Saturday morning, and was about five miles distant; while Crittenden's division had arrived on the 6th. The first gun of the battle was heard at 5 o'clock vering Pittsburg landing, and a renewal of the attack by the Confederates was successfully resisted, two gunboats adding their fire. Buell's advance had reached Savannah on the evening of the 5th, and at 6 P. M. on the 6th, Ammen's brigade crossed just at the close of the day's battle. Next morning all of Nelson's, Crittenden'el Robert F. Looney, of Memphis, Tenn., for the Army of the Mississippi; Major D. W. Reed, of Chicago, Secretary and Historian, and Captain James W.
