By the Governor of Virginia — a proclamation.
--Whereas, a vacancy has occurred in the representation of Virginia, in the Mouse of Reprasentatives of the Congress of the Confederate States, by the resignation of William Smith, the member elected from the district composed of the counties of Alexandria, Spotsylvania, Fairfax, Fauquier, Prince William, Rappahannock, Culpaper, Stafford, Orange and King George: --Therefore, I. John Letcher Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, by virtue of authority vested in the Executive by law, do hereby require the officers, civil and military, whose duty it is to hold elections, to cause an election to be hold at the places of voting prescribed by law, on the 23th day of the present month, for a member of the House of Representatives to fill the vacancy aforesaid.
Given under my hand as Governor, and under the seal of the Commonwealth at Richmond, this second day of May, 1863.
