The rumor which has prevailed in this city for the past day or two, of the killing of this gentleman by the Yankees, near his house in Fauquier county, is painfully confirmed.
A received by a relative in Richmond no doubt of its correctness, and dispatch the hope that was generally entertained it would prove unfounded.
It seems them a hand of marauders, who had deserted from the Federal army, were pillaging and committing every species of outrage upon the places of the county, when Mr. Scott and others complained to the Yankee officer in command, who took no notice of the statement of these gentlemen, and instituted no measures to punish the thieves.
As a last resort, Mr. S., with a number of his neighbors, organized a band for the protection of their from the assaults and annoyances of these unscrupulous barbarians.

Partisan Rangers.
The proposition of Captain John Scott, of Fauquier, to raise a corps of Partisan Rangers, to operate beyond the lines of our regiment army, will attract the attention of all men of during and adventurous na who desire to serve their country in time of need.
It is, beyond doubt, the most attractive branch of the service, and the history of this war will unquestionably with instances of heroic valor similar to those performed by the gallant Morgan his men in the West.
Captain Scott all the requisite qualifications for the prise he proposes to undertake, and we his command will be filled up and in at an early day. We call attention advertisement in another column.
