The War News.
A report was in circulation yesterday that Early gave the enemy a severe chastise, at New Market on Friday last and drove than two miles. The following official telegram, however says nothing about this occurrence, and we suppose the report is unfounded:
"Headquarters, &c., September 26, 1864. "To Hon. J. A. Seddon, Secretary of War:
"General Early reports that the enemy advanced against him on the 24th instant at New Market.
He fell back to Port Republic.
"On the 25th, the enemy advanced towards Harrisonburg — his cavalry having probably passed through that place. R. E. Lee."
According to unofficial reports, General Early afterwards fell back to Swift Run gap, on the line between Rockingham and Greene counties, eighteen miles northeast of Waynesboro' and about twenty from Staunton.
This is a very strong position, where he can quietly rest, re-organize his army, and prepare for future movements.
