False pretences. --Samuel W. Scott, a young man of genteel appearance, was arraigned before Jne of the proprietors of the Spotswood Hotel. Scott, the prisoner, stayed at the hotel during a pairst came there he registered his name as Samuel W. Scott, and took a room on the second floor. So I knew him or not. I then told the Major what Scott had stated to me, and he expressed some distrust concerning his (Scott's) honesty. I then questioned Scott about his being a detective, and he sScott about his being a detective, and he said he was here with one of the chief detectives of Philadelphia, named Franklin.
