ports afloat in town to the effect that Meade is retreating precipitately to Washington, under pressure from Lee, following with an immense army, is absurdly erroneous, as those know who are aware how deliberately Meade is changing his front to guard against any possible surprise from Lee, should he attempt a flask movement. Late reports from Richmond show that the idea is entertained there that Meade's army has been depleted to the extent of four army corps for the reinforcement of Rosecrans; and it may be that Lee is maneuvering to ascertain if our army is really as weak as reported. The supposition is that Lee designed moving a force through Thoroughfare Gap, and rumor has it that the enemy has already appeared there; but in this case rumor must be considerably ahead of the fact, and in any event Meade has the shortest line of march to Manassas, and can readily post himself so as to confront Lee wherever he may make his appearance, if, indeed, the latter is not already

dates to the 4th inst., has arrived at New York: The news by the Scotia of the defeat of Rosecrans created considerable sensation and caused a rise of 5 per cent, in the rebel loan; but the advsustained, and closed about 25 discount. The London News says Gen. Bragg's victory over Gen. Rosecrans is a striking demonstration of the wisdom of the new military policy of the Confederates in Confederate cause is to gain solid advantage from his sword. The London Times thinks that Rosecrans was defeated by superior strategy rather than more fighting, and says it is evident that the Fh of victory. The London Army and Navy Gazette attempts to show the dangerous position of Rosecrans, but suggests that the Union prospects may be brighter than the telegraph makes out. As to Chaadstuffs were quiet and steady. Provisions were quiet at former prices. The rebel cotton loan advanced five per cent. on the receipt of the news of Rosecrans check, but subsequently declined.

From East Tennessee. Lynchburg, Oct. 16. --The Lynchburg Virginian has the following from East Tennessee: "Before the battle of Chickamauga 27 regiments of Yankee cavalry and mounted infantry, estimated at 14,000, passed Greenville, Tenn., bound eastward, with the intention of making a raid on the Va. and Tenn. railroad. Upon receiving intelligence of the defeat at Chickamauga, they retreated west, to reinforce Rosecrans, and were met by our forces at London and Sweetwater, and here driven back. A portion of this force attacked our forces at Bible Ridge, 6 miles west of Greenville, on Saturday, the 10th. Our men fought gallantly, defeating and inflicting severe loss on the enemy.--Our loss in the engagement, 50 killed and two hundred wounded. Apprehensive of a flank movement, our force withdrew to Henderson's, ten miles east of Greenville. Another engagement took place there, and at Rheatown on Sunday, in which our forces fought desperately, cutting their way thro

The correspondent os understood in Louisville, he says: Gen.
