The Washington monument.
--By inadvertence we stated in Saturday's paper that the statue of Gov. Thos. Nelson, intended for the above monument, and which will soon be here, would cost about $4,500. The six statues (that of Nelson forms part of the group) will cost $9,000 apiece.
The equestrian statue of Washington cost $36,0Nelson forms part of the group) will cost $9,000 apiece.
The equestrian statue of Washington cost $36,000. Besides the statues there are sundry allegorical figures--six of them are to represent the lives and characters of the statues under which they are placed, and will cost $5,000 apiece.
The two shields which are to be placed on the sides of the monument, representing the coat of arms of the State, as it appears on both sides o at seal, will cost $2,000 each.
All this is exclusive of the granite work, which was estimated at $150,000, and which, no doubt, from inefficient management, cost many thousands more.
The error in the statement of the price of Nelson's statue arose by not referring to the fact that payment was made in instalments for the work.
