Martin was stationed at Fort Oregon, about forty miles distant, and I sincerely hope that he was not present at the time of the attack, as the State can ill-afford to more effectual resistance to the enemy. It is sincerely to be hoped that the officers stationed there, among whom are Lieut. Col. Johnston and Major Gilliam, of Martin's Regiment, did not participate in the engagement, and have been saved the hard fate of their friends. [for the Richmond Dispatch]Chesterfield soldiers' aid Society. A meeting of a portion of the ladies of Chesterfield county was held at the Brick School-House, in that county, Sept. 31, 1861. A Soldiers' Aid Society was formed, and the following officers appointed: Mrs. Wm. Martin, President. Mrs. Robert M. Pulliam, Vice President. Mrs. Bland, Treasurer. Miss M. F. Pulliam Secretary.
