We have been busy since our arrival in erecting this battery, using the greatest precaution lest the enemy should discover and shell us before we were ready. Our men worked hard, and we had just completed the work when a tug boat came within 400 yards, and commenced shelling us with 9-inch Dahlgren shells. After a few rounds from the tugs, a large man-of-war steamer commenced also, at the distance of two miles, and was getting the range, when Capt. Lee commenced firing in return. Our guns struck the war steamer twice, and she was compelled to withdraw out of range, and, when I last saw her, had out most of her boats undergoing repairs.--During that day and the next our battery kept up a constant fire upon everything that passed up and down the river, and damaged a few vessels severely. Hill, C. R. Bricken, S. P. Cocke, Thos. M. Alfriend, R. H. Dibrell, J. B. Winston, J. H. Gentry, R. D. Mitchell, J. B. Glazebrook, T. A. Parker, A. D. Williams, W. E. Johnston, I. D. Mercer, A. W. Richardson, A. S. Lee, A. Arsell, Jr., J. P. Hill, Geo. I. Herring, W. G. Dandridge, F. B. Hart, R. T. Reynolds, W. P. Parkins, S. Mason, D. J. Saunders, Thomas Lawson — several cases against each. The Grand Jury also presented White & Riley, for retailing ardent spirits at the Theatre, without license. William Burnes, for exhibiting faro. Clara Coleman, fer keeping a house of ill-fame.
