I have seen them. We have lost our first officer, Lieutenant Gaston, who was accidentally shot by one of his own [men] in a little reconnaissance across the river yesterday morning. . . . To-night we had funeral services here just at dusk, and it was one [of] the most impressive funerals I ever knew. . . . r dangerous element about them than I expected; very few devils in the regiment; but the same soft texture which nothing but the contact with gunpowder seems to harden.
