he American mercantile marine. On July 6th, Rear-Admiral Bailey reports the destruction of important salt works, under the direction of Lieutenant-Commander A. F. Crosman, of the steamer Somerset. This duty was well performed by Acting-Master Thomas Chatfield, who landed in boats under the guns of the Somerset, and, with sixty-five sailors and marines, destroyed four distinct stations.
