The North had been usually governed by a deputy, appointed by the governor of South Carolina, Spotswood, Ms. and Thomas Cary obtained a commission in the wonted form. The proprietaries disapproved the appointment, and gave leave to the little oligarchy of their own deputies to elect n, and which, in Virginia, even royalists condemned as unjustifiably severe. At once the true spirit of Quakerism appeared in an open disobedience to unjust laws: Cary and some of his friends took up arms; it was rumored that they were ready for an alliance with the Indians; and Spotswood, an experienced soldier, now governor of eal of all laws they disliked. Spotswood could only send a party of marines from the guard-ships, as evidence of his disposition. No effusion of blood followed. a breach of the peace committed by him — A summons issued against George J. Scammel, for allowing a goat to go at large, was dismissed.--Case of Jacob S. Tyler, for selling a watch, worth $20, of which Wm. G. Allen was knocked down and robbed in the street, was continued for witnesses.--The case against Ettie Hanelin and Dan Tucker, for breaking open Mark Moss' door, and carrying away a door, window-blind and sash, was dismissed, it appearing that there was no felonious intent.--Wm. E. Coleman, alias John W. Edmond, was put in jail and ordered to work in the chain-gang for ninety days, for falsely swearing he was a qualified voter, and exercising the right of suffrage on Thursday. It appeared that he had been recently discharged from the Penitentiary, and was a suspicious character.--Jean Sitz, for drunkenness, was committed in default of surety.--Pat Caughlin was committed for beating his wife, Bridget.--Mike Brannon, charged with threatening to assault Thos. Cary, was discharged.
