Major — I have the honor to report that the Pontoon train (fifty-eight wagons) loaded with thirty canvas pontoons, together with the lumber necessary to lay a bridge, at least four hundred feet long, also the pontoniers, consisting of the Third battalion of the Twelfth Missouri cavalry volunteers, under my command, left Eastport, Mississippi, at 8 o'clock A. M., on the twentieth of March, 1865. (The teamsters were all detailed from the battalion of pontoniers, which consisted of two hundred and five (205) men, and five (5) line officers, besides Lieutenant Acting Assistant Quartermaster.) The Twentieth marched by the way of Iuka to Bear river, escorted by the Second battalion of the Twelfth Missouri cavalry. The distance was about fifteen miles. isitor at Sumner's lodgings, and he continued for many years to live in Washington. Sumner, in his testimony in 1872 in the French arms investigation, as also in his speech February 28 of that year (Works, vol. XV. p. 9), spoke of the studies and eminent connections of the marquis. He died in New York in 1891. Agassiz sailed in April, 1865, on his expedition to Brazil and the Amazon. Sumner entered heartily into the plans of the great naturalist. He wrote to him a God-speed March 20, 1865. Life of Agassiz, by E. C. Agassiz, vol. II. p. 634. just before he sailed, and received letters in return in which Agassiz gave an account of his researches. June 21, 1865. and Dec. 26, 1865, the latter printed in Agassiz's Life, p. 635.
