Starvation rations
Lieut D. H. Burts has exhibited to the Columbus (Ga.) Enquirer a Vicksburg document — the original order for the issue of mule meat to one of the commands — date July 2d, 1863 Also, a statement of the amount of rations issued to a brigade of 2,944 men, for three days, near the time of the surrender.
The following is the bill of fare for the three days mentioned: 4,371 pounds mule, 820 pounds rice, 2,732 pounds peas, 12 pounds candles, 49 pounds soap 393 pounds salt, 269 pounds tobacco.--This is an allowance of only a half pound of mule meat, one and a half ounces of rice, and less than a pound of peas, for each man per d
