omerset, Lieuts. Howell and English, crossed the bar of St. Mark's River, Fla., and destroyed a Confed. Fort and barracks. June 17, 1862. Federal expedition up the White River, when near St. Charles, was fired into from masked batteries, and the gunboat Mound City received a shot in her boiler which occasioned the destruction of 82 of her crew by scalding, 25 only escaping uninjured. The Confed. works were captured by the land forces under Col. Fitch, who took 30 prisoners. June 26, 1862. Three Confed. gunboats burned on the Yazoo River by their officers, to prevent their capture by the Union ramflotilla, Lieut.-Col. A. W. Ellet, then in pursuit of them. June 28, 1862.
