name of only one Medford man, Richard Hall. Besides standing ready to aid his struggling country, he served his town in the various capacities of selectman, treasurer, clerk, and moderator. May 12, 1760, the town voted to purchase two fire-hooks. These were the first pieces of fire apparatus that the town owned so far as we have any record. the first fire-engine was purchased with money raised both by taxation and by subscription. In 1763 the town raised by tax £ 26 13s. 4d. for this purpose. The first fire-engine is said to have been named the Grasshopper. March 11, 1765, the town appointed nine firewards and twelve engine-men. Isaac Royal, Esq., was one of the firewards. the frontispiece in this number is reproduced through the courtesy of Mr. W. C. Eddy. there is an increased demand for the past numbers of the Register, and a number of sets have been sold recently. The supply is limited, and when exhausted the yearly volumes will have a largely increased value.
