Archida'mus Ii. king of Sparta, 17th of the Eurypontids, son of Zeuxidamus, succeeded to the throne on the banishment of his grandfather Leotychides, B. C. 469. In the 4th or perhaps rather the 5th year of his reign, his kingdom was visited by the tremendous calamity of the great earthquake, by which all Laconia was shaken, and Sparta made a heap of ruins. On this occasion his presence of mind is said to have saved his people. Foreseeing the danger from the Helots, he summoned, by sounding an alarm, the scattered surviving Spartans, and collected them around him, apparently at a distance from the ruins, in a body sufficient to deter the assailants. To him, too, rather than to Nicomedes, the guardian of his colleague, Pleistöanax, (Pleistarchus was probably dead,) would be committed the conduct of the contest with the revolted Messenians, which occupies this and the following nine years. on shore: the Greeks also landed, Leotychides having first called aloud on the Ionians in the enemy's army to aid in the attainment of their own freedom; and in the battle of Mycale, which ensued, the Persians were utterly defeated. (Hdt. 8.131, 132, 9.90-92, 96-106; Diod. 11.34; Paus. 3.7.) Afterwards Leotychides was sent with an army into Thessaly to punish those who had sided with the barbarians in the Persian war. He was uniformly successful in the field, and might have reduced the whole of Thessaly, had he not yielded to the bribes of the Aleuadae. For this he was brought to trial on his return home, and went into exile to Tegea, B. C. 469, where he died. His house at Sparta was razed to the ground. His son, Zeuxidamus, died before his banishment, and he was succeeded on the throne by his grandson, Archidamus II. By a second wife he had a daughter, named Lampito, whom he gave in marriage to Archidamus. (Hdt. 6.71, 72; Paus. 3.7; Diod. 11.48; Clinton, F. H. vol. ii. pp. 209, 210.)

Numi'cia Gens an ancient patrician house, a member of which, T. Numicius Priscus, obtained the consulship as early as B. C. 469. PRISCUS is the only cognomen in this gens.

ned the slightest hesitation, his hereditary prepossessions as the grand-nephew of Cleisthenes would have been quite sufficient to decide his choice. That that choice was determined by selfish motives, or political rivalry, are suppositions which, as they have nothing to rest upon, and are contradicted by the whole tenor of his public life, are worth absolutely nothing. As his political career is stated to have lasted above forty years (Plut. Cic. l.c.), it must have been somewhat before B. C. 469 when he first came forward. He then devoted himself with the greatest assiduity to public affairs; was never to be seen in the streets except on his way to the place of assembly or the senate; and withdrew entirely from the convivial meetings of his acquaintance, once only breaking through this rule to honour the marriage of his nephew Euryptolemus, and admitting to his society and confidence only a few intimate friends. (Plut. 100.31.) Meantime Castor and Pollux invaded Attica, and carried off Helen and Aethra, Academus having informed the brothers where they were to be found [ACADEMUS]. Menestheus also endeavoured to incite the people against Theseus, who on his return found himself unable to re-establish his authority, and retired to Scyros, where he met with a treacherous death at the hands of Lycomedes. The departed hero was believed to have appeared to aid the Athenians at the battle of Marathon. In B. C. 469 a skeleton of large size was found by Cimon in Sevros [CIMON], and brought to Athens. It was believed to be that of Theseus, in whose honour a temple was erected, in which the bones were deposited. A considerable part of this temple still remains, forming one of the most interesting monuments of Athens.
