I have received the New York Herald, of the 14th inst., and send you a summary of its contents.
A dispatch in the Herald, dated May 13th, says:
Gen. Grant had a severe battle with Gen. Bowen at Clinton, ten miles from Jackson, on the railroad, last Wednesday, lasting all day Gen. Bowen was beaten, and driven back to wards Jackson.
The women and children are all leaving that place for Meridian, and the men are preparing to hold the place.
It is reported from rebel sources that a large force of rebels is coming from Charleston and Mobile to prevent the capture of Jackson and Vicksburg, and that Gen. Grant, apprised of the movement, has fallen back to the river to await reinforc
