--A difficulty occurred on Wednesday night in Henrico county on the premises of Mr. Thornton, on Fulton Hill, between Mr. W. S. Bassford, a clerk in the 1st Auditor's office of the C. S. Treasury Department, and Dr. Currie, who was employed in the Quartermaster's Department. It appears that some time since the parties had a serious misunderstanding but it had been settled and no one thought any more about the matter. Currie, who had been absent from the city a few days, had just returned, when he and Bassford again met and commenced a quarrel, which resulted in blows being passed, and finally in the death of Currie, who received a stab in the lower part of the abdomen, causing instant death. Bassford hails from Atlanta. Ga., where he was at one time connected with the Intelligencer Newspaper.--Currie was from Cynthiana, Ky., and for some time was engaged as clerk under the Washington Government. Both parties are of respectable standing, and the unfortunate affair has fallen heavily upon many of their friends. Bassford, soon after the commission of the deed, surrendered himself to the authorities of Henrico county.

--The land fever is at its zenith, and, of necessity, must soon begin to subside. For weeks past search a train has passed on the Danville road that did not carry a score or more of land hauteurs on it, all searching for a place in the neighborhood of Dan River Amelia and Halifax counties have been scoured, bid farms, worked to death, have come into market, and ready purchasers, at high prices, have easily been found. Along the ridge of the road the farms generally are very poor, most of them having been "put through" under the culture of tobacco; but on the Dan river, where the high waters have not given the farms a thorough washing, the corn and other crops are looking beautiful. Finding but few places suited to their wants to be purchased at any price, many of the "hunters" have taken conveyances at Danville and made for that fertile region of country in North Carolina which lies along the line of the unfinished

--John Williams, a free negro, employed in the capacity of body servant to Lieut. M. S. Cles Cland, was yesterday arraigned before Alderman Sanxay, on the charge of stealing from his master one watch chain, worth one hundred dollars, and disposing of the same, Lieut. C. had never suspected the honesty of Williams, and had for some time entrusted him with everything of value which he possessed; but experience had taught him that few negroes were to be trusted, and in future more caution would be observed in dealing with the chaos. The case was at first sent on to the Hustings Court; but the Acting Mayor, by the request of Lieutenant Cleveland to be permitted to leave immediately for his regiment, and a promise that the negro should accompany him to revoke his decision, and acuteness him 39 lashes.

--A charge was preferred yesterday morning against a white man named Joseph. W. Wood, who claims to be a detailed soldier, for trespassing on the promises of Mrs. Nancy. Riddell and severely whipping a slave woman belonging to Mrs. Elizabeth Hancock. The evidence given by Mrs. R. proved Wood's conduct before his encounter with the negro took place to have been of a very characters and his subsequent behavior, as testified to by the officers who arrested him, left little doubt upon the mind of Alderman Sanxay of the punishment, he should receive. Wood was ordered to prison for three months and then to give security for his good behavior in the sum of $150.

--At Castle Thunder yesterday were the following commitments: John A. Wasser, charged with selling a Government horse and being a suspicious character; G. Werner and Henry Vonberger, Yankees, P. Drourey, co B, 7th Ala; J D White, co E, 13th Ala; W W Smith co D, 44th Ala; Andrew Stimes, King and Queen; H O Godwin, co I, 8th Ga.

At the Libby Prison five Yankees were received from Knoxville, Tenn., four from the 1st N. Y. cavalry, captured at Berryville, Va., Aug. 22; one from the 6th Ohio cavalry, captured at Orleans, Va., Aug. 25.

--John, a starchy little negro, belonging to John B, Davis, was discovered on. Wednesday night last with a large basket in which was secreted three bams. Inquiries on the spot elicited from Jolm the confession that be had bought the bacon from a fellow servant; but he readily confessed in examination yesterday that he had taken them from his master, and accounted for his equivocation when arrested from fear of the position in which he had been caught. With considerable complaisance he received the announcement that he was entitled to 39, well laid on.

--Martha Bradley, a free negress, was found in the street by officer Morris on Wednesday evening last in a drunken and disorderly condition. A night's lodging in the watch-house had failed to restore her entirely to consciousness, and when it was announced that she should receive twenty lasires and further trial before the Hustings Court, she made an obeisance to the Acting Mayor which would have done credit to the recipient of an agreeable and valuable present.

--Wm. M. Garvy, some time since arrested and confined in jail in Pittsylvania county for breaking open a safe of the Southern Express Company and stealing therefrom a large sum of money, has recently been sentenced by the Court of that county to imprisonment in the penitentiary for two years. Garvy was employed at the time of the robbery, as messenger for that company, and accompanied their freight car between this city and Danville.

--We were yesterday shown a hat made of rye straw, which, in point of beautiful appearance and elegant finish, we have never seen excelled. It was made by J. R. Holleman, an invalid soldier from Isle of Wight county, Va., and intended for His Excellency Jefferson Davis. The number of knots tied in making the hat was 18,500, and we learn that the whole of it was done by the hand. The straw itself was as fine as an ordinary sized darning-needle.

--A meeting of the Henrico Mounted Guard, a company formed of citizens of that county for home defence, will take place at Fairfield Race Course on Saturday afternoon next, at 4 o'clock, when a permanent organization will be effected. The well known character of those composing this company gives promise of its efficiency and advantage to the county.

--Thompson, a negro, employed at Camp Jackson Hospital, was arrested on Wednesday afternoon, having in his possession a lot of bacon, candles, and bed clothing, supposed to have been stolen. The evidence proving his guilt, Acting Mayor Sanxay ordered him 39 lashes, and consignment to jail for want of a proper register.

--Nancy, a negress belonging to Mrs. Rachel Burruss, underwent an examination before Alderman Sanxay yesterday morning on the charge of stealing from the premises of Mr. J. M. Skinner several articles of valuable clothing. In view of the testimony given on trial her case was sent on to the Hustings Court for grand larceny.

--The name of the party who was fined $20 by the Mayor on Tuesday last for buying watermelons contrary to law was John Chass instead of John Jaiser. Richard Costile, of the 5th La. regiment, was the party arraigned on Wednesday on the charge of watch stealing, instead of Thomas Costlic, as printed.

--The Armory battalion were yesterday receiving their new uniforms, and as soon as the whole of them can be fitted out our citizens will have an opportunity of observing them in full parade.

--A gentleman from Vicksburg reports an important military movement on foot. Its chamber has not transpired. A person from Benton also reports a force of 3,000 Yankees moving from Yazoo City towards Benton.

A party of our cavalry lately crossed the Big Black and went within eight miles of Vicksburg, where they met a line of negro pickets and chased them from their posts. The Yankee cavalry came up to their assistance, when our men retired.

--(Via Staunton, 27th.)--The Yankees have fallen back to attack Gen. Jones at Lewisburg, in the rear, while another detachment is about attacking him in front. Jackson, during the last four days lighting, behaved gallantly. After being flanked and surrounded several times, he heroically cut his way out. A detachment of Major Lucky's battalion went in the enemy's rear and destroyed part of his wagon train. Our loss thus far, all told, is from fifty to one hundred.

--A special to the Appeal, dated Canton, Aug. 25th, says the Yankees are reported defeated in Arkansas, on the White river, by General Price. Reinforcements have been sent from Vicksburg. Grant has gone to Natchez. The Federals have left North Mississippi, and trains are again running to Grenada and Panola.

--The flag of truce has returned from Vicksburg. The character of the communication is not known.

General Sherman says if Gillmore has taken Charleston and fails to lay the city in ashes, he will be sacrificed by his troops. His superiors, the Northern people, demand the utter destruction of Charleston.

--Garvey, the express man, who robbed the Southern Express Company while employed as messenger between Danville and Richmond, was convicted to-day and sentenced to the Penitentiary.

--The Yankees are in force four miles below Raymond. Four Federal prisoners and one negro arrived here yesterday. No news from the front this morning.
