<milestone unit="sentence" n="12" />Correspondents — especially telegraphic correspondents — with the best intentions, are often led estray.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="13" />They are obliged, in the absence of official intelligence, to depend on the evidence of persons from the scene of action, who are often but imperfectly informed themselves, and sometimes on mere rumor.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="14" />They therefore, in such cares, state their authority, and let the public judge of the value of their information.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="15" />In the present instance, the very enormity of the loss in prisoners attributed to the enemy excites incredulity, although no man doubts that the reporter stated accurately the prevalent belief in <placeName reg="Martinsburg, Berkeley, West Virginia" key="tgn,2119135" authname="tgn,2119135">Martinsburg</placeName> at the time.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="17" />Whether the details be precisely such as the telegraph gives us is another matter.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="18" />If <persName n="Lee,General,,,," id="n-0001.0000.00000.00006" reg="nearbymention:Lee,Gen,,," authname="lee,gen"><roleName n="General" full="yes">Gen.</roleName> <surname full="yes">Lee</surname></persName> has, after a hard fought battle, taken <measure n="40000" type="prisoners">40,000 prisoners</measure>, he has gained <num value="1">one</num> of the most complete victories on record.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="20" />The force to defend it consists entirely of militia, many of them but ill affected, and they have within the city a deadly enemy, as numerous as themselves, panting for revenge and ready to rise on the <num value="1" type="ordinal">first</num> opportunity.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="21" />In the panic which must follow such an astounding overthrow nothing can be easier than to march in and take possession. </p>
<p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="22" /> We are confident that <persName n="Lee,,Gen,,," id="n-0001.0000.00000.00007" reg="default:Lee,Gen,,," authname="lee,gen"><foreName full="yes">Gen</foreName> <surname full="yes">Lee</surname></persName> has struck some great blow from the strong belief generally entertained that he has all this time been acting upon a certainly.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="24" />What serves to convince us that a battle was fought and a victory gained on <dateStruct full="yes"><day type="name" full="yes">Sunday</day></dateStruct>, is the account given in the telegram of the movement made by the <orgName>corps of <persName n="Hill,General,,,," id="n-0001.0000.00000.00008" reg="mostcommon:Hill,nomatch:0" authname="hill"><roleName n="General" full="yes">Gen.</roleName> <surname full="yes">Hill</surname></persName></orgName>.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="69" />The obligations of the alien to assist in the defence of the country in which he resides is not denied, and it can only be by the <rs>Government</rs> of the country which could determine the services he should render.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="100" /> On yesterday afternoon, about <time value="3oclock">3 o'clock</time>, the troops all along the line might have been seen in order of battle, the guns keeping up their usual din and the sharpshooters, more than usually brisk with their fire.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="101" />Several prominent officers might have been seem glasses in hand, and their eyes turned in <num value="2">two</num> directions, mainly, however, on the hump of land in the centre.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="102" />Presently a movement might have been seen of the earth, upward it rose, as if some slumbering Man of the <rs type="place">Mountain</rs> were shaking off the superfluous covering; in a moment more, through a gaping crater, a shaft of white smoke rushed through, and then a cloud of dust.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="103" />An instant clatter of firearms then commenced and raged with painful intensity, for an hour, when, out of the confusion of smoke, something might have been seen of <num value="2">two</num> sets of combatants almost, as you may say, at arm's length. </p>
<p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="104" /> All this while, before and after the explosion, there was a terrific cannonade.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="105" />Previously, every gun along the line was in play, and the intervals of a few seconds not filled with the burst of shells, the crack of guns of all calibers were closed up by the more awful crackle of the infantry along the whole line.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="106" />It is true that no assault was being made along the line, but the whole circuit of muskets was firing <unclear /> into the aimless air; nobody was to be seen, there were the bleak rages as ever, there the silent forts, but the bullets were whizzing into their entrenchments in myriads of radial lines.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="107" />We have come to learn and to realize how fatal all this shower of leaden hail may have been, if it had no Gitorior purpose, though not a soul was to be seen.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="108" />Its real purpose was, however, to prevent any concentration on the critical points by feigning an attack at all. Besides the <num value="1">one</num> on the centre, another was selected on <persName n="Blair,,,,," id="n-0001.0000.00000.00049" reg="mostcommon:Blair,nomatch:0" authname="blair"><surname full="yes">Blair</surname></persName>'s front, which, as we learned afterwards, proved abortive, there being an insufficiency of powder, or being placed too loosely in the mine. </p>
<p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="109" /> After the explosion — which, by the way, was either noiseless, or at least not noticeable in the rear of heavy guns — our soldiers rushed for the breach, intending to occupy the whole of the work.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="110" />The blast had opened up a rift right across the fort, extending from wall to wall.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="111" />The rebels, as if they had knowledge of the design, or else by a marvelous coincidence, rushed simultaneously from the other end. The powder had left a couple of huge projecting lips, and between them a crater like fissure, making the distance from farrow to furrow from <num value="10">ten</num> to <measure n="20feet" type="distance">twenty feet</measure>. Thus, ranged behind these new formed walls, our men found themselves face to face with their foes, and a dire and dreadful slaughter commenced from perhaps <num value="300">three hundred</num> men on each side, within this arenas of <measure n="200feet" type="distance">two hundred feet</measure> length. </p>
<p>

<milestone unit="sentence" n="112" />The contest was severe, and the fresh packs of rifles kept on opening on all sides.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="113" />The gunners loaded and fired away vigorously.--The rebels crowded up with <name n="Great Spirit" type="divinity">great spirit</name>.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="114" />Our men went in, a regiment at a time, with full cartridge boxes, and in <measure n="30minutes" type="date">thirty minutes</measure> were relieved by others.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="115" />The firing for about an hour was more terrific than any battle field ever the gory field of war has witnessed.

<milestone unit="sentence" n="116" />Had every shot touched its man there would have been half a <num value="1000000">million</num> stain; as it was, by far the greater portion of them found lodgment in the stolid clay. </p>
