The said Negro had on when committed a red fannel shirt, dark grey coat, and black pants. He was sold from this county in October, 1860, by Mr. John E. Wilson, to the says) Mr. Andrew Jones, of Wilmington, N. C., from which place he ran away; but that Mr. Jones lives now in Richmond. The owner of said Negro will come forward, prove property, pay charges, and take him away, else he will be dealt with as the law directs.

Bloody Black Republican Toryism.[from the New York Daily news, June 27.]

The shallowest, most conceited, and flippant, as well as the most unprincipled and bloodthirsty, Abolition journal which daily makes its appearance in this city, occupies itself just now, con amore, with the task of urging the Government to hang the officers and crew of the privateer Savannah, landed here, on Tuesday, by the Harriet Lane.-- "Their crime," it says, "is clearly piracy, and is punishable with the extreme penalty attached to that crime. Let it therefore be inflicted." What contemptible, shortsighted imbecility! Has the editor of the aforesaid newspaper ever read the history of the earlier stages of the war of independence? It so, has he forgotten that a certain George Washington, a notorious rebel against the British Crown, was similarly menaced with death as a traitor, if he could only be caught? And that Lords This, That, and The Other, issued proclamations, declaring that every single colonist taken with arms in his hands was guilty of undoubted felony, and would be hung? Washington did not effect to deny the rebellion. He justified it as having been forced upon Americans by British despatism — not the tithe as, bitter as the South has groaned under at the hands of the Abolitionists of the North--and in answer to the threat that his soldiers should be executed, contented himself with solemnly assuring the Commander-in-Chief of the Tory army that where the latter hung one man, he would string up two. Let Mr. Lincoln and his advisers proceed to the length of hanging the crew of the Savannah, and we have no hesitation in predicting that such bloody reprisals will be inflicted by Jefferson Davis that an outcry of horror and indignation will arise against the senseless maniacs at Washington, who shall have aroused his just wrath.

The Lincoln Government affects to regard every single individual who has taken up arms to defend Southern soil from invasion, as punishable by hanging, and all who have aided them or rendered them comfort as guilty of misprision or treason. At least four hundred thousand individuals ought, under such teaching, to be led to the gallows tomorrow, and the remainder of the population of the Confederate States should be subjected to fine and imprisonment. This is, substantially, the doctrine held by all of our leading Abolitionists, although, when the time for carrying their threats into effect comes, a certain instinct of self-preservation whispers in their cars that the chalice they so recklessly hold up to others may, later, be returned to their own lips. If they were thoroughly consistent, they would not rest contented, unless each prisoner captured were visited with an ignominious death. They should either directly advocate such brutality, or else they should cease to impose their reckless clamor upon the public. Americans have been accustomed to express sympathy with Italians, Hungarians, and even Sepoys in a state of insurrection, condemning, as worthy of perpetual infamy, rulers who have decreed the penalty of the law upon their subjects; but never under any foreign nationality — not within the most barbarous Turkish Pashaliks — have theories of punishment been promulgated, so ferocious and savage as those which have formed the staple of republican ravings since the middle of April.

One of the most painful phenomena of these dark and distracted times, is the effort that is being made by the autocracy at Washington, and its organs elsewhere, to discourage every tendency to kindly, conciliatory, or peaceful feelings toward the Southern States, and to create such embitterment between the two sections as may render a future settlement of difficulties impossible. The comparatively mild policy of General McClellan in Western Virginia and Kentucky has been condemned, although a contrary course must inevitably lead to a local guerilla warfare of the most deplorable description. Murderous attacks upon women and children, and the slaughter of innocent citizens in a Court of Justice, and massacres like that of Booneville, excite the jubilant applause of the demoniacs who hold the destinies of the country in their hands. Emulating the Robespierres and Marats of the Reign of Terror, they scent out the possibility of sacrificing life with a keen, blood-hound instinct, as cowardly as it is barbarous. No patriotic consideration will bring them to their senses, but they will soon be checked by their own fears, when those retaliations have commenced on Southern soil, which are inevitable, if the recommendation of a general resort to capital punishment is carried into execution.

In accordance with international law, it has been officially declared by no less than two ex-Chancellors of England, as well as by the present Lord Chancellor, that privateering is not piracy, and that to punish it as such would be murder. The Confederate States occupy a position as a de facto Government, which the United States would instantly recognize, did they hold their present relation to any other Power besides itself. England and France have both recognized them as belligerents, and, not improbably, both of these countries will, ere long, assume an attitude, in their behalf, hostile to ourselves. The blockade of the Southern coast, which has been unconstitutionally proclaimed by the President, is almost exclusively maintained by vessels, as much privateers as the Savannahs and, therefore, equally liable to be considered pirates. If secession is unlawful, so has been the invasion of States, the closing of sea-ports, the massacre of citizens, the enforcement of martial law, the raising of armies, the infringement of the habeas corpus, the violation of telegraphic dispatches, and a hundred daily iniquities that are unscrupulously perpetrated with the sanction or under the orders of the Administration. If Southern privateers are to be hung, such havoc will be made among Northern prisoners of war as will cause the Abolition demagogues who are inciting Government to such cruel folly, to tremble at the consequences of their ill-digested, bloody counsels.

Bad Times at the North.

--The New York Daily News, of June 27th, says:

Bad times are reported as existing in the interior districts of the North and East. The farmers cannot raise money. The country banks refuse to discount, having already done so in most cases to the full amount of their capital; and in nine out of every ten instances none of their paper has been paid, but has been renewed. The farmers have yet on their hands very large quantities, in the aggregate, of rye, corn and cats. These stores had been held for higher prices, until now, when no cash market exists. Considerable of the old, and nearly all the new wool clip, is also in farmers' hands.

Consequently, with all the elements of prosperity in their possession, they cannot realize money value, on account of the present depressed state of business, caused by the war. The farmers, then, in this way, are paying a direct tax. Those who were loudest, a few weeks ago, in their clamor for war, now hold their tongues. They will soon cry peace; they have now no objection to others doing so. The reaction of feeling is slowly but certainly developing itself, and after a short period has elapsed, even those who clamor for war will have broken their brass cymbals and be found piping the gentle notes of peace.

A letter, dated Philadelphia, June 27, published in the Baltimore Sun, gives the following narration of suffering among the working classes:

A large meeting of unemployed workmen was help yesterday for the purpose of getting up a petition to the Common Councils asking for employment on such public works as can be prosecuted at this time. One of the speakers said that they called for no charity. They desired to toll and to sweat us they have hitherto done. He continued: "We call upon these gentlemen to protect us in our property; it is a duty incumbent upon them. Our property lies in our ten fingers, each one marked with blisters, which are now wearing of for want of that labor. We are getting weak and faint. We are in want of assistance — such assistance as will remunerate our country in future ages. There are men among us who have not tasted flesh for two months. Only give us work, that is what we want — work, work!" The petition was numerously signed and the meeting adjourned.

Three months of the Lincoln-Seward Administration.[from "Le Pays" of Paris, June 7, 1861.]

When we review the policy of Messrs. Seward and Lincoln, when we examine the facts which have transpired and the occurrences we have witnessed recently at Paris, we are almost tempted to believe that the Administration of the United States is conducted under the delusions of lunacy!

It is a fact that after the Presidential election Mr. Lincoln himself was so far from considering himself elected by the national preference that he entered Washington City furtively, in order to escape, as he pretended, from certain infernal plots — which plots, it is evident, only existed in his own weak brain.

Assuming the reins of Government, this excellent Mr. Lincoln imagined — at least he predicted — that the Confederate States were only temporarily separated from the rest, and that they would soon return and resume their places under his parental authority. But the refusal of these States to respond to this appeal of their indulgent father angered him to such an extent that he soon after called on his Northern friends for 75,000 troops in order to treat the South as rebellions.

Those Southern States which had not yet seceded, (and upon the fidelity of which Mr. Lincoln had reckoned in order to intimidate those which had heretofore seceded,) having protested against an unconstitutional, coercive policy, his anger seems to have been thereby aggravated into a furious rage. He proposed to punish them severely, and having doubtless little confidence in his 75,000 volunteers, he decrees under his individual authority a regular army of 45,000 men, overleaping utterly the restrictions of the Constitution, which forbid such an act! Like a new Lewis XIV. this Republican Lincoln exclaims:

"I am the State and the Constitution!"

Soon after this, we became witnesses here of a similar spectacle. While Mr. Seward declares that he possesses the materials necessary to equip a quarter of a million of men, and armories capable of making more arms than the Government requires, he sends to Paris certain agents, who publicly, at the Hotel of the Louyre, open a list of individual subscriptions, patriotically destined for the purchase of French and English arms; and these agents hold meetings, in contempt of our hospitality and neutrality, even setting at defiance our police regulations and our laws concerning public assembiages!

And while from the White House Mr. Lincoln threatens Spain, one of his ministers in Paris solicits her aid! While one of his ministers defies England, one of his agents solicits arms of her!

In the United States, Secretary Seward pretends that he is strong enough to crush out rebellion, while his plenipotentiary ambassadors abroad are demanding, through the columns of Galignani's Messenger, the assistance of France, of England, of Spain and of Mexico, in order "to save the Union!"

These same ambassadors are pretending in France that the purpose of their Government is to purge Confederate States of traitors and rebels, who are hindering the progress of civilization; while official organs of their party in the State of Massachusetts utter rallying cries which would cause the barbarians of the most barbarous times to blush for shame!

Considering all these things, Mr. Faulkner notifies Mr. Lincoln that his aggressive policy did not, to the European Cabinets, appear to be inspired by prudence; that, according to the law of nations, the Confederate States had really a right to the recognition of the European Powers. And then, forgetting that these rebels are not yet conquered, Mr. Lincoln levels his thunder against all Europe.--First, a Minister of his appears in England, and addresses to The Times that famous letter which every one knows about. Then, comes that gracious dispatch from Mr. Seward to Mr. Dayton. Then, still later, comes the warning to Europe to suspend all commercial relations with the Confederate States. And finally, we have an ultimatum by which Mr. Lincoln announces that he will declare war against any European Power which shall take part in this quarrel.

This is the policy of the Washington Government. Unable, thus far, to conquer the Confederate States, it nevertheless pretends to be prepared to carry on a war, if necessary, against the whole world.

Had we not reason for remarking, as we did at the beginning of this article, that the most singular in sanity appears to rule at Washington city?

Official report of a Skirmish — Improbable statement of an Indiana Colonel.

The following report was received by Gen. Scott, at Washington, on the 28th ult. The veliant Colonel admits that it "sounds like fiction," and we think it is:

Cumberland, June 27.--To Gen. McClellan: I have been accustomed of sending my mounted pickets of thirteen men in all the different parts along the several approaches to Cumberland. Finding it next to impossible to get reliable information of the enemy, yesterday I mounted the thirteen and directed them, if possible, to get to Frankfort, a town midway between this place and Romney, to see if there were rebel troops there. They went within a quarter of a mile of the place, and found it full of cavalry.

Returning, they overtook a party of forty-one horsemen, and at once charged them, routing and driving them back more than a mile, killing eight of them and securing seventeen horses. Corporal Hayes, in command of my men, was desperately wounded with sabre cuts and bullets. In taking him back my men halted about an hour, and were then attacked by the enemy, who were reinforced to about seventy-five men.

The attack was so sudden that they abandoned the horses and crossed to a small island at the month of Patterson Creek. The charge of the rebels was bold and confident, yet twenty-three fell under the fire of my pickets, close about and on the island. My fellows were finally driven off, and scattering, each one for himself, they are all in camp now. One of them, Corporal Hayes, is wounded, but recovering. Another of the party, John C. Hollins Crook, is dead. He was taken prisoner and brutally murdered.

Three companies went to the ground this morning and recovered everything belonging to my picket, except a few of their horses.--The enemy were engaged all night in boxing up their dead. Two of their officers were killed, and they laid out twenty-three on the porch of a neighboring farm-house. I will bury my poor fellow to-morrow.

I have positive information, gained to-day, that there are four regiments of Confederates in and about Romney, under Col. McDonald. What their particular object is, I cannot learn. The two Pennsylvania regiments are encamped at the State line, nine miles from here, waiting further orders. They have not yet reported to me. They hesitate about invading Maryland.

The report of the skirmish sounds like fiction, but it is not exaggerated. The fight was really one of the most desperate on record, and abounds with instances of wonderful daring and coolness.

There is a moderate business doing in domestic goods for many purposes, especially in woolens, but otherwise there is but little movement to advise. Many of the mills are working upon these goods, and there is now no scarcity of supplies. Cotton goods are held with increased firmness, owing to the small stock and rise in the price of material; there is still a demand for drills and duck for the army, but beyond this the market is generally quiet. In foreign goods there is some little activity in trimmings and goods suited for the summer wear and traveling purposes, but the volume is quite small. The short credit system is to be inaugurated on the 1st of July, but merchants do not seem desirous of availing themselves of the few days left to purchase under the old system; in fact, most of them are not in a position and credit to do so.--New York Express.

Death of Charlotte Bronte's father.

--The Rev. Patrick Bronte, the rather of the popular authoress, "Currer Bell," died at the parsonage in Haworth, on the 7th of June.--He was born in the year 1777, and was consequently 84 years old at the time of his death. He died comparatively alone, passing from earth as he had lived in it. A cold, gloomy, unsympathizing man, he had the reputation of being, and will be remembered as, the father of one of the rarest families that were ever born to man. His name dies with him, but the fame achieved by the suffering, long patient, persevering, spirital "Currer Acton, and Ellis Bell," is imperishable.

The blind in Ireland

--The report of the Molyneux Asylum for blind women has just been issued. There are 1,000 blind women in Ireland, and nearly as many of the other sex. Dr. Wilde, the oculist, that there is a greater proportion of blind in Ireland than in any other country of Europe, except Norway. It appears from the poor law inquiry now in progress that there are 1,700 blind paupers in the Irish workhouses.

Destructive fire in Centre Wheeling.

--On Tuesday a fire broke out in the sash and door factory of Rolland & Holliday, in Centre Wheeling, Va., and spreading rapidly, soon communicated to a house owned by Mrs. W. H. Moyston adjoining, another owned by Wm. Exley, and a small frame on the opposite side of the street, owned by Jos. Caldwell, all of which were speedily destroyed, with nearly all their contents. Total loss $13,000; no insurance.

Reconnoissance by rail.

In Napoleon's time railroads had not been invented. He may therefore be excused, by military critics for not availing himself of this means of reconnoissance within the enemy's lines. But since railroads were invented there have been wars — wars, too, in districts where the "iron horse" does duty.--He has been made extremely useful as a beast of burden in the transportation of enormous quantities of "contraband of war," by which term we do not now refer to the live ebony to whose sole use the U. G. Railroad is so exclusively devoted. The service to which railroads are put in the conveyance of men and material in war bears its full proportion to the employment of this great labor-saving and timesaving device for more peaceful purposes.

But if any famous commander, Frank or Hun, Hun or Turk, European, Asiatic, American or African, has heretofore pressed locomotives and trains of cars into the scouting branch of military matters, we confess ourselves ignorant of the when and where.--We rather incline to the opinion that military men in general would scout the idea. An Ohio General, however, has resorted to the novel expedient of steaming away, by rail, with a hundred or two soldiers, some miles into the region occupied by the enemy, to reconnoiter. The extraordinary ruse certainly succeeded in adding to the stock of information concerning the enemy, besides making we may presume, a decided addition to the officer's knowledge of principles which will insist on thrusting themselves in every war.

But, unfortunately, this knowledge was gained at a cost which forces upon us the recollection of a certain off-quoted maxim of Poor Richard: "Brave soldiers', patriotic soldiers' lives pay the wasteful price of such lessons." Our readers can imagine the scene presented when a railroad train, proceeding as though freighting a pic-nic party on a pleasant excursion, albeit with "grim-visaged war" visible inside the cars, is suddenly, while passing a curve, saluted with a deadly volley of iron from masked batteries. The locomotive, detached by a cannon shot, backs out of the scrape with the affrighted engineer, leaving the trapped soldiers to make off, as best they can from the clutches of the exulting enemy. That enemy had not run a train of cars in the other direction for reconnoitering purposes; but he seems to have known what would happen with a little preparation on his part; and we commend to such of our Generals as are passing their military 'prenticeship in stations which ought to be filled by master workmen a speedy imitation of the rebel foe's common sense in some particulars.--Providence (R. A tragedy in Missouri.

--A correspondent of the St. Louis Democrat, writing from Camp Blair under date of the 23d inst., gives the following account of a horrible tragedy which took place in the neighborhood of the camp on Wednesday of last week:

It seems that there was some dispute between two neighboring families about a tract of land. On the day mentioned, as Mr. McNull, the murdered man, was plowing in his field, he was met by a Mr. Wilson, his wife, (Wilson's,) with their two sons and daughters. Wilson began abusing McNull, the whole family threatening him with annihilation, and finally told McNull that if he did not leave the county that night he would be mobbed and forced to leave. The latter replied that he would die first, upon which Mrs. Wilson snapped her fingers and said to the rest. "come on, boys, damn him, let's kill him." A gun was levelled at McNull, but failing to go off, he was struck on the back of the head and felled to the earth. Mrs. W. and her sons and daughters, with the old man, then fell upon him and beat him until life was extinct. The tragedy, however, did not stop here. Mrs, McNull, from her house; seeing her husband thus brutally assaulted, ran out to assist him. She was met by old Wilson, who caughther by the hair of her head, pulled her down and stabbed her in the back. The Wilson girls then fell upon her and beat her until they were actually tired. They then left their victims and fied.

Soon after the occurrence, a messenger came into Camp Blair for assistance from the troops to arrest the murderers. Captain McFall at once started for the scene of the tragedy with twenty men, but on his arriving at the spot found that the civil authorities had arrested the murderers. They were all captured and securely confined. The people about the country were intensely excited, and threatened to lynch the whole Wilson family; but sober judgment prevailed, and the law will take its course. Mr. McNull was buried on the next day.

Angel Calderon de la Barca.

--By the last steamer from Europe we have received intelligence of the death of Dr. Angel Calderon de la Barca, late Spanish Minister at Washington. The deceased, who was upwards of 70 years old, was well known in this country, where he married a Scotch lady of superior attractions and intellect, and dwelt happily for a number of years. His death occurred at San Sebastian, Spain, on the 01st ult.

Wool.

--The Wheeling Intelligencer says:

The wool-growers have sheared all their sheep and the wool is ready for sale, but there is nobody to buy it, at anything like a living price. The holders of the wool say that nothing less than 40 and 45 cents will buy their clippings.

The Bank of Upper Canada has lost within a few years $1,500,000. It is proposed by the Cashier to reduce the shares from $50 to $30 each. The institution is solvent, notwithstanding its severe losses.

Richmond Dispatch. Tuesday morning.......July 2, 1861.

The following notice from the Secretary of War to newspaper correspondents is timely and appropriate. War is a new thing to us all — especially such a war as that now in progress. It is natural enough that in its incipiency there should be such acts of indiscretion in the press, and such mistakes in crediting false rumors, as inexperience in such a war would occasion. We have, however, had some experience, and the mistakes and indiscretions of the past should be a warning for the future. There is a decided change for the better already perceivable, and we are sure the dignified and gentlemanly appeal of the honorable Secretary of War will have the effect of inducing the press to be still more guarded in what it has to say about preparations and events:

To Newspaper Correspondents:

Gentlemen:--While I have not withheld permission from any of the representatives of the press to visit the camps in Virginia, and while I am as much the uncompromising advocate of an unshackled press as I am of the freedom of speech, and of the Independence of the Confederate States, yet I have thought it proper, under existing circumstances, to make an appeal to you to forbear from the transmission and publication of such intelligence as might be detrimental to the great cause in which we all feel so deep an interest.

You are a ware of the great amount of valuable information obtained by us through the mediam of the enterprising journals of the North; and we may derive profit from their example by a discriminating and judicious reserve in communications for the Southern journals.

It must be obvious that statements of strength, or of weakness, at any of the points in the vicinity of the enemy, when reproduced in the North, as they would be in spits of all the vigilance in our power, would warn them of danger to themselves, or invite an attack upon us; and, in like manner, any statements of the magnitude of batteries, of the quantity and quality of arms or of ammunition, of movements in progress or in supposed contemplation, of the condition of troops, of the Comminearist, &c., might be fraught with essential injury to the service.

To gentlemen of intelligence and of unquestionable loyalty to the cause of the Confederate States, I do not deem it necessary to be more explicit; nor can I doubt for a moment that you will appreciate my motives in making this frank appeal to your patriotism and discretion. The Read shell.

--We have given a communication from Alabama, touching the shell invented by Dr. Jno. B. Read, of that State, a direction which we think the best.

The last Brilliant achievement.

We publish this morning full accounts of the bold and successful plot of the capture of the steamer St. Nicholas and one brig and two schooners — the brig laden with a valuable cargo of coffee, and the schooners one with ice and the other with coal — all highly acceptable, especially the ice. Col. R. Thomas, of Richard, was the hero of the affair, and he conducted it in a manner that at once makes him famous. Disguised as an old French woman, who could not speak a word of English, (poor creature!) he took passage on the St. Nicholas at Baltimore for Washington.--After getting down into the Bay he threw off his disguise, and with the co operation of his men, who shipped as New York Zouaves, he took possession of the steamer. He was joined by Capt. Hollins, of our Navy, at Point Lookout, who participated in the captures of the other vessels. We refer to the details in our news columns.

This is a very beautiful addition to the number of the gallant and successful surprises by our brave Southern boys, since the struggle began. It is but the beginning, we opine, of a catalogue of daring exploits at sea that will greatly enrage the old ape, and ruffle the sweet and amiable disposition of old "Fuss and Feathers." Old French women will be a terror to them both. We very much fear that that class of women, and especially those a little unhandsome (for we learn that our gallant Captain did not look like a pretty French woman) will be subjected to very rude treatment by the Lincolnites, for they will fear all of them are Southern officers in disguise. The other officers associated with Col. Thomas in the achievement, are Lieut. Geo. W. Alexander, Adjutant, and Lieut. F. Gibson. These three headed the boarding parties in the captures.

Barbarities in the Northwest.

The account published this morning of the destruction of the fine dwelling, barn, and other houses and property generally of Mr. Richter, near Fairmont, in Marion county, brings to the notice of the Southern people one of the most execrable acts of vandalism of the present ruthless invasion. It is copied from that Black Republican organ, the Wheeling Intelligences, and therefore is hardly magnified in its enormity. The traitors in the Northwest are heaping up trouble for themselves, and if there are engaged in this war one class of men whose outrages excite a thirst for revenge more than any other, they are the people of Ohio. They come from a State teeming with fertility — having perhaps more rich arable land than any other State of like area — which was carved out of the princely domain given to the Federal Government by Virginia. Vengeance wreaked upon such men will be especially grateful to every Virginian. We trust and believe that they will get what they deserve.

"War to the Knife."

Many of the letter envelopes manufactured in the North exhibit a ferocious spirit, which we are happy to see finds no imitators in the South. One of the most popular envelope mottoes is "War to the knife and the knife to the hill." What a ferocious, savage, implacable spirit! Why wouldn't "war to the knife" answer, without adding that superfluous piece of bombast, "and the knife to the hilt?" Oh, most truoulent and bloody-minded belligerents, compared with whom the warriors of Shanghai are modest and unassuming. "War to the knife and the knife to the hilt," when, as Bethel proved, the mere exhibition of a North Carolina knife at the end of a gun made the "knife and hilt" gentry take to their heels at a speed which beat the best time of Planet.

Yankee Ward.

The defenders of Mathias' point did rid the world of a very great scamp when they put an and to the life of Capt. Ward--commonly styled Yankee Ward--commander of the Freeborn. He was a man in very bad odor in the Navy — a very scurry and detestable scamp.--He had given us a foretaste of his brutality, and would have rioted in his war upon private property and defenceless people whenever he could have gotten the opportunity. The curtailment of his life winds up his infamous . There are more like him who deserve to follow after. He belonged more especially to the chicken-stealing department, for which he was in every way competent.

North Carolina State Convention.

--The Convention of North Carolina, on Thursday an ordinance transferring the State Confederate Government; also, following the North Carolina out of the State, to vote for members of Assembly, Government of the Confederate Congress, and Vice President. The to action over on Friday until .

Economical Independence and Wealth of the South.

The impending crisis to the commerce and manufactures of the North is beginning to make itself manifest to those who have any faculties of perception and of reflection. The fallacies of Helper's statistics are no longer fashionable. Such a singular exposition of political economy as the following from that foolish rhodomontade is no longer gospel:

"Any observant American, from whatever point of the compass he may hall, who will take the trouble to pass through the Southern markets, both great and small, as we have done, and inquire where this article, that and the other came from, will be utterly astonished at the variety and quantity of Northern agricultural productions kept for sale. And this state of things is growing worse and worse every year. Exclusively agricultural as the South is in her industrial pursuits, she is barely able to support her sparse and degenerate population. Her men and her domestic animals, both dwarfed into shabby objects of commiseration under the blighting effects of slavery, are constantly feeding on the multifarious products of Northern soil. And if the whole truth must be told, we may here add, that these products, like all other articles of merchandize purchased at the North, are generally bought on credit, and in a great number of instances, by far too many, never paid for — not, as a general rule, because the purchasers are dishonest or unwilling to pay, but because they are impoverished and depressed by the retrogressive and deadening operations of slavery, that most unprofitable and pernicious institution under which they live."

It is now beginning to be discovered, even at the North, that this witness, like many others who go on the stand to support an unsound cause, proves too much. He admits the variety and quantity of Northern productions which have been sold at the South, but which he says are never paid for, not because the purchasers are dishonest, but because they are impoverished and depressed by the retrogressive and deadening operations of the institutions under which they live. The New York Herald, whose testimony in this case can not be impeached on the ground of partiality to the South, admits that there is not a merchant, trader, farmer, manufacturer, or ship-owner, from the capes of Delaware to Passomoquoddy, who does not know that, as a class, the merchants and traders of the South have been the safest and best purchasers that ever came from a distance to buy in the Eastern markets.

It is another undeniable fact, that when this crisis came upon New York in 1857, ripping up the bubble of Eastern and Northern expansion, it was the trade of the South that saved thousands upon thousands of New York merchants from bankruptcy, and which first set the wheels and hammers of Northern manufactories again in motion. The trade of the great Northwest was pronounced in New York at that time to be perfectly rotten, and has not since entirely recovered a sound condition. On the other hand, the leading commercial journals of New York, have over and over again conceded that the South, for the last twenty years, has never failed in its payments to the North, and instead of getting large amounts of agricultural productions and of manufactures on a credit which is never paid, there is not a Northern merchant or producer of any kind but would be glad, with the return of peace, to sell to the South twice as much of Northern products as he ever sold before.

Even Helper could not deny the magnitude of the Southern consumption of Northern productions, and yet he was absurd enough to argue that the North should destroy the South by an aggressive and agrarian invasion of its social institutions. And those very New York papers which were foremost in exposing his fallacies, have been insane enough to join the bue and cry of the present wicked and senseless war. The first effect of this policy has been to destroy the great Southern market for Northern productions, the existence and value of which they had acknowledged. It threw back at once upon the Northern market the surplus of potatoes, onions, apples, corn, hay, butter and cheese which Northern farmers had sold at the South, and the innumerable fabrics of cotton, linen, wool, leather, metal, glass, clay, &c., which it had taken from Northern workshops. It is needless to say that the financial revulsion in the North which must follow this suicidal war upon its own interests, will surpass the most gigantic disaster of the kind that has ever been witnessed in modern times.

But this unholy and absurd crusade, so ruinous to the North, has made the idea of industrial independence as rife in the South as that of civil and political freedom. Indeed, it has now become evident that to achieve that Might which is the only Right acknowledged by lawless men, a nation must rely upon itself for the supply of its own wants. The blockade has already produced new manufacturing enterprises in the Southern States which were never dreamed of before. Our cotton mills will be increased, new forges and foundries set up, workshops of all kinds opened, local efforts in production and manufacture stimulated everywhere, and a universal public sentiment established to use or consume no one thing not grown or manufactured on Southern soil. Direct trade with foreign countries is a thing we shall easily accomplish, for the North was only able to concentrate it through the ease, frequency and friendliness of its communications with the South.

For such an economical policy the South is eminently independent of the North. She need not rely on the North for the raw materials — such as cotton and wool, timber and ores, hides and earths — nor for the products which are now necessaries in civilized life — such as the cereals, sugar and tobacco. She has them all within herself, and when she adopts an economical policy like that which separates the contignous nations of Europe from each other, she will find it of easier accomplishment than ever has before been found.--On the day that she does this the North will become tributary to the South, and it will puzzle Northern economists to find wherewith to pay for the Southern productions which they must buy — such as sugar and tobacco, cotton and naval stores. These have been hitherto paid for in "Yankee Notions," which will not henceforth pass current in a Southern latitude. The North has none but itself to blame for the ruin that it has brought upon itself, and the prosperity it has unwittingly forced upon the Southern States.

The schooner Tropic Wind.

--The following note from the British Consulate in this city will be read with interest by merchants and shippers:

British Consulate, Richmond, July 1st, 1861.

To the Editors of the Dispatch:

For the benefit of the merchants and shippers by the British schooner Tropic Wind, lately seized by the blockading fleet in Hampton Roads, and sent as a price to Washington, I beg to state that official information has reached this office from the British Legation at Washington, which states that the Tropic Wind and her cargo have been released and given back to the charge of the master.

Another Resignation.

--Among the passengers who arrived at Baltimore from Old Point last Friday, was Lieutenant M. P. Jordan, of Norfolk, an officer of the U. S. Navy, who arrived at Fortress Monroe on board the steamer Mount Vernon, on Saturday last, from Pensacola. He is on his way to Washington to resign his commission.

Postmaster General Reagan arrived in New Orleans on the 27th ult., from Texas, and left the next day for Richmond.

Virginia State Convention.Sixteenth day--[Second session]. Richmond, July 1, 1861.

The Convention was called to order at the usual hour by Mr. Southall. Prayer was pronounced by Rev. Mr. Hall.

Mr. Macfarland arose and said: The Convention will please give me its attention for a moment, while I refer to a gross misrepresentation which appears in the Dispatch of this morning, [in the report of the proceedings of the Convention as reported by the Reporter.] purporting to be a report of a conversation which occurred upon the floor on Saturday last. I say the misrepresentation is gross — gross. If it proceeded from ignorance, the ignorance is pitiable; if it proceeded from design, the malignity is contemptible. I refer to the conversation which occurred between the member from Wetzel (Mr. Hall) and myself. I have called his attention to the statement in the Dispatch, and am happy to find that he concurs entirely in the correctness of my recollection. I will read a portion of the report:

"Mr. Hall, of Wetzel, replied to Mr. Macfarland, by remarking that 'fellow feeling makes us wondrous kind.' Mr. Macfarland here desired to know what Mr. Hall meant by his remark. Mr. Hall rejoined, "I meant, sir, just what I said. You and your friends always went with Brown while he was here, and now when he is proved to be a traitor, you wish to vindicate him.""

The member from Wetzel did use the language "a fellow feeling," as here reported, and when I asked him what he meant, he had the candor to say at once that he had no reference to me. Yet, this simple incident, so easy of comprehension by the plainest capacity, is perverted and made the foundation of injurious insinuations. The gentleman will agree with me in this statement of the facts.

Mr. Hall, of Wetzel.--I will add that my recollection of the conversation referred to, is pretty much in accordance with the facts which the gentleman from Richmond has detailed. When interrogated by him as to what I meant by the expression "a fellow feeling makes us wondrous kind," I certainly stated distinctly that I had no reference to him, and did not in tend to reflect upon him.

An ordinance providing that the Banks of the State shall not give credit to the notes of the Banks of States inimical to the Confederate States, by receiving such notes in payment of any public debts, was introduced and laid upon the table. An ordinance was considered giving authority to the citizens of Virginia in camp anywhere in the Confederate States to vote, under certain restrictions, for President and Vice-President of the Confederate States, Carried. An ordinance was submitted providing that loyal citizens in any part of the State who, by reason of military occupation of the county seat by Lincoln's forces, shall be entitled to vote in any other precinct where no such obstructions exist.

Mr. Branch, of Petersburg, moved to take up an ordinance providing that all the county and corporation Courts in the State shall have power to enroll and draft into the service of the State, subject to the articles of war, all able-bodied free negroes in the State, and compel them to work on fortifications and works of public defence. Moved to lay on the table. Motion carried.

Mr. Fisher moved that as soon as the same shall be printed, the Secretary shall send to the clerks of the County Courts two, and to the members of this Convention ten, copies of all ordinances of this body. Amended that all ordinances of a penal nature be published in certain newspapers of the State. Rejected. The original ordinance was then passed.

Mr. Morton moved to take up an ordinance confining to the civil Courts of Richmond the trial of persons suspected of treason who may be brought here by the military authorities of the State. Substitute offered and passed.

Mr. Fisher offered a resolution inhibiting the officer charged with that duty from paying Judge Thompson, of the 20th Judicial District, his salary as such Judge until further orders.

Mr. Goode submitted an ordinance providing that wherever the words "United States" occur in the Code of Virginia or other laws of the State, the words "Confederate States" shall be substituted therefor. Amended by adding "where applicable." Amendment rejected — original ordinance passed.

Mr. James Barbour called the attention of the House to the fact that the Committee on Federal Relations had just had an interview with the President of the Confederation, and he desired the committee to meet this evening at , and added that on the main subject of the conference the interview was satisfactory.

An ordinance was then taken up prescribing the oath of allegiance for all officers of the Commonwealth, now or hereafter to be appointed, and that the Court of Appeals or the Judge of the Circuit Court, shall be empowered to declare such offices as refuse to take the prescribed caths as vacant, and empowering the Governor of the State to remove all such recusants from office who are engaged in the collection of the revenues of the State, and appoint others in their stead.

Yankee corn on Georgia Lands.

--Our readers will recollect that much complaint was made some weeks ago by planters who had used grain brought from the North and West in putting in their crops. Its early tasseling seemed to destroy all hope of a yield.--We thought the complaint premature, as we had often used with success the same variety on a small scale for table use. A correspondent residing in Talbot county writes us as follows, under date of the 24th inst.:

"When I wrote you last, I told you a great deal of Northern corn had been planted in this county and those adjoining, and the general opinion was that it would not do for this country. Since that time, some are much in favor of it and express no regrets at having seeded with it. One of my neighbors has fifteen acres of bottom land planted, and thinks the yield will be very heavy.

"Wheat has turned out splendidly, and oats doing the same. Corn looks well, but would do better with rain."--Sav. Rep.

The defences of the Mississippi.

--The Memphis Appeal, alluding to the defences of the Mississippi river and the appointment of Brigadier General Polk and Colonel Hardee to the command thereof, says:

General Polk will have the command, as Brigadier General, of the forces mustered into the Confederate service, while General Pillow is in no wise interfered with as Major General of the Tennessee army. At the same time, being relieved from the routine of duties involved in erecting the Mississippi river defences, he will hereafter be able to give more attention to the particular work contemplated in his appointment — that of organizing the gallant army of the Volunteer State.

Major General Pillow and Brigadier General Polk are close and bosom friends, and have been so for twenty years, and our readers can rest assured no conflict can occur between the two officers. We happen to know that General Pillow has applied, with strong prospect of success, to President Davis for orders for higher duty and a position of more importance to the country.

Upon his arrival, General Polk will find the defences erected in the last six weeks, under the order of General Pillow, about completed. They are of such a character as to have met the approval of all military men who have examined them, and to secure the Mississippi Valley from invasion by our Northern enemies.

The Piratical fleet.

--There are seven vessels at present visible to the naked eye, lying close to Santa Rosa, along the coast of that island. The chartered U. S. steam transport Vanderbilt is amongst the arrivals since Sunday , and during last night another large transport, supposed to be the Illinois, arrived at the anchorage. It is thought that the concentration of so many large vessels in the vicinity of Fort Pickens indicates some action on the part of the notorious Harvey Brown, who claims to be the "Commander of all the forces in Florida." Bah! he will soon discover that the greater number are opposed to him and his command. True to the principles of liberty, they can never recognize authority founded upon despotism and the trampling upon human rights and constitutional privileges.--Pensacola Observer, 25th ult.

It will be remembered that the Vanderbilt sailed from New York with a miscellaneous cargo, including Billy Wilson's Cut-Throat Regiment.

From Alexandria.

--A telegraphic dispatch to the Northern press, dated Alexandria, June 28, says:

Information was received from the Zonave camp this morning, announcing the safe arrival of Lieut. Harrigan and the Captain of the Zonaves, whose absence last night gave rise to fears for their safety. Lieut. Hewitt's company returned at , without meeting the Confederate cavairy, Private Murphy, of company E, U. S. cavalry, is still missing. The affair at Claud's Mills seems to have been only another attempt to harass our pickets, who are at present the only victims of their warfare, and to notify us of their presence. They made only two captures, neither of whom were prepared for resistance when pounced upon by about fifteen cavalry from a side road. Private Murphy, of the U. S. cavalry, was for the moment off his horse. The other, a Zonave, was engaged in picking cherries, and without his arms. Another portion of the Confederate cavalry, about forty strong, drove is the United States pickets to within a mile of Claud's Mills, and then retired, without succeeding in making any other captures.

The Engagements at Aquis Creek — a gallant defence — Hishly interesting statements — the results of the achievement.

To the Editors of the Dispatch:--What has surprised me more than anything else in these days of exaggeration, when every little skirmish is magnified into a battle, is that so little has been thought of the repeated attacks upon, and, in particular, the three days terrific cannonade of, the little sand-bag battery at Game Point, Aquia Creek. For so glorious a result, with such means of resistance to the attacking force, I know nothing to be compared to it.

The main cause, perhaps, of this under-valuation, (to use a mercantile phrase,) may be attributed to the unsatisfactory official report, which gave a brief account, as of nothing extraordinary, of what was indeed a glorious victory.

I happened to be at the Creek on the evening when the first attack was made by a single steamer, since ascertained to be the Freeborn. This attack, as I heard an officer say, was evidently only designed to get the range of our guns, as only about a dozen shots were exchanged. One of the enemy's rified shells passed through the redoubt and exploded in the officers' quarters, beneath the Captain's bed, and demolished everything in the apartment. By the fragment of another shell, one man was slightly wounded in the hand. This was the only casualty.

It was taken for granted that another attack would be made. I went the following day to the Point, but everything was quiet, excepting that our boys were busy strengthening their redoubt, by throwing up additional quantities of sand in front. The next day (Friday) I again rode over after breakfast, and had no sooner reached the range of hills which overlook the point, than I saw that something interesting was about to take place. In addition to the Freeborn, there were two other armed steamers, one of them, however, a small tug, which were evidently preparing for an attack. Soon after they approached and opened fire, which was steadily returned by our battery of two guns.

In about half an hour after the action began, the Purcell battery, of four small rified guns, was brought to the height near which I stood, and opened upon the enemy, and some of its shot must have struck him, for he immediately returned its fire, and did so from time to time while the fight lasted.

In the meantime the shot were flying into and the shell were bursting over our little battery on the point, and several times we thought that it was destroyed; but when our fears had grown almost to certainties, the boom of the gun would tell that our defenders maintained their post. About the enemy withdrew. Our men were wholly unhurt; what injury the enemy sustained we could not tell; but it must have been considerable, as he was repeatedly struck.

Soon after the fight, one of the steamers went up the river; it was supposed to procure assistance, and the supposition proved correct. On Saturday a large three-masted steamer, which proved to be the Pawnee, mounting 14 heavy guns, had joined the squadron of the day before, and all were evidently preparing for an attack. The manner in which our men had maintained their post the day before satisfied me that they would do their best; but I regarded their annihilation as certain when I looked upon the over whelming force arrayed against them.

Owing, it was said, to the small amount of ammunition, the Purcell battery was not this day brought into action, but one of the guns was placed in the Game Point battery. Only think--two large and one small rified gun, looking like a 6-pounder, against four steamers, one with 14 guns, heavier than those in the battery, and the others carrying as many in the aggregate — some of them rified ones.

Just before the first, shot was fired, the building at the extremity of the wharf was set on fire and the bridge leading to it blown up by the defenders. Between 11 and 12 the battle began, and continued for five mortal hours; and when the cannonade and the conflagration were at their height, the grandest spectacle was exhibited which I have ever seen or expect to see, and I wish that every lover of the sublime could have been there. The incessant flashes through a sheet of flame, the eddying smoke, and the hiss and whiz of ball and shell hurling and bursting in the air, with the loud reports reverberating among the hills, made us, as I have said, tremble for the little band which was literally girdled with fire.

But there was a flag-staff beside the redoubt, and our hearts were cheered as, from time to time, through the lifting smoke, we saw that our flag was triumphantly waving. "Poor fellows!" we exclaimed, again and again, as a shell burst apparently in the very midst of the battery; but, in a moment, the report of a gun would tell that though, at least, were left to defend it.

The enemy hauled off, leaving a partially demolished sand-bank, with its defenders unscathed behind it. His loss must have been severe as evinced by the number of times he was struck and the precipitation of his retreat — a retreat which received a salute of three cheers and a parting shot from the little garrison.

For the disparity of force, and the quantity of ammunition expended by the enemy in so brief a space of time, the defence of Game Point I consider unparalelled in the annals of modern warfare.

To sum up the injury known to have been sustained by the enemy, the Anacosta was so much injured that the carpenters who surveyed her pronounce that she cannot be repaired. The Pawnee is admitted to have been eight times struck--one of them a raking shot, which dismounted two of her guns. The Freeborn took up twenty-one dead bodies.--Among them, it is reported that of the 2d Lieutenant of the Pawnee — and there were upwards of fifty wounded--among them, the Commander of the latter vessel.

The results of the achievement cannot be two highly estimated. Had the battery been silenced, Gen. Scott, in pursuance of his plan, would have fortified the railroad, taken possession of Fredericksburg, therefrom take the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, cut off the communication between our Northern army, and marched with his hordes directly upon the Capital. An. Eye-Witness.

The Read shell in the fight at Bethel.

--From late accounts of this spirited cembat, it appears that the rifle shells invented by our townsman, Dr. Read, rendered efficient aid in discomfiting the invaders of the Old Dominion.

The Howitzer Battery, under Col. Magruder, did good service; but the prominent place is assigned to a Parrott gun, firing the Read shells, which were purchased last year by the Military Commissioners of Virginia.

These shells, it seems, were fired with much precision, and exploded with such fatal effects in the ranks of the enemy as to render the working of the hostile artillery almost impossible.

The Parrott guns, prudently provided by Virginia, were cast iron six-pounders, manufactured and rified expressly for firing the Read shells. We do not wonder that they should have made their mark at Bethel, as we have just inspected a table of practice with one of these same guns at West Point, last summer, showing that a shell weighing nine and a half pounds, fired with only one pound of powder, ranged two miles and a quarter at 15 deg. elevation, and at 35 deg. elevation struck three miles and a half from the gun.

If such results can be attained with the Read shells from small field-pieces, weighing but nine hundred pounds, what may we not expect when our ten-inch Columbiads and heavy Dahlgren guns are rified and furnished with similar projectiles as they readily may be by our Southern foundries?--Tuscaloosa Observer.

A Slap at Gen. McClellan.

--The Washington correspondent of the New York Tribune thus hits at Major General McClellan:

Kentucky comes within the angle of incidence. The train of peace-makers, bearing palms and singing pastorals, with the venerable bell-wether, Mr. Crittenden, in the van, is halled by a flourish of trumpets from the lips of Major General McClellan. He has concluded an enduring truce. When Gen. Harney was baited into a similar trap in Missouri, it was supposed no other General would be immediately led into a pitfall but we are to live and learn with each diurnal paying-out of our mortal coll. When Gen. McClellan telegraphed to Washington some weeks ago for permission to buy fifty dollars' worth of pine lumber for a camp-chapel, there were many who believed that he would wield the sword of the spirit with more muscle than the carnal weapon of Ames & Co.'s manufacture. His genius is not war, but negotiation. He shines in diddled diplomacy, and is second in the order of Generals who preach peace on earth and good will to men.

Gen. Johnson.

--The Winchester Virginian, of the 28th ult., says:

If there be those who desire information as to the whereabouts of Gen. Johnson's army, we will inform them that it is all about in spots — just where it ought to be. It is certainly not at Harper's Ferry — nor can we say it is at Winchester — although we saw one or two regiments pass through town yesterday. For further information, inquire of Abe Lincoln.

The same paper says:

Some of our friends express fears that Lincoln's troops will take possession of Harper's Ferry. For one, we say, let them come and take it. They may now station there fifty thousand troops, for all we care.

Fire-arms

--Messrs A. B. Barrett & Co., proprietors of the Southwestern Foundry, at this place, have recently commenced the manufacture of fire-arms. They have about twenty hands now employed, and are turning out at this time ten a day. When they get their machinery in complete order, which we are assured will be in a few days, they will be able to turn out from 25 to 30 guns per day. The guns manufactured by these gentlemen have been inspected and approved by competent judges. So far as we ourselves are capable of judging, we have no hesitancy in saying that they are as good rified as can be made anywhere. We understand that it is the intention of Gen. Floyd to supply his Brigade with the Barrett rifle.--Wytheville Telegraphic.

Vandalism in Northwest Virginia.

We find the following account of the doings of the Ohio and Pennsylvania troops, who have invaded Northwest Virginia, as given by their own organ in Wheeling. To wreak vengeance on these wretches at their own homes will be for all Virginians a labor of love:

The movements in Western Virginia--men killed and wounded.

The Wheeling Intelligencer (Republican) has the following letter narrating the exploits of the Federal troops in Western Virginia:

Shinnston, Va., June 22.--Yesterday a detachment of Ohio troops, under Capt. Calle, of the 20th regiment, company I, arrived here from Mannington, via Hessville and Lumbersport, at which last place they took several prisoners. Shortly after nightfall Capt. Calle detached a squad of men to go down to Righter's, under the guidance of two of our citizens. On arriving at Righter's house Captain Calle left his men in the yard, and advanced to the door, but could not gain admittance. In a few moments a signal was heard at the back of the house, and instantly about seventy or eighty rebels, who had been collected and concealed by Righter in the orchard, rushed around the corner of the house and fired on Capt. Calle and his men, wounding one in the breast another in the arm, and wounding Jno. Nay, one of our citizens very badly in the groin. On this attack the troops fired and dispersed, leaving Nay and the man wounded in the breast lying on the ground. They were afterwards carried to Nay's father's, who lives about half a mile from Righter's. The one wounded in the breast has since died. The ball has been extracted from Nay's wound, and it is thought he will recover.

Capt. C. before daylight this morning, dispatched messengers to Clarksburg and went himself to Fairmont. He returned about noon to-day, with about 250 men — went to Righter's, great numbers of our citizens accompanying. They found the premises deserted. The troops entered his house and appropriated everything they thought would be useful. They then set fire to the house (which you know is one of the finest in this section of the country,) to the stables, barn, and all the outbuildings, and they were consumed in one general conflagration. I was present and witnessed it. They then took all the horses on the farm, several wagons and buggies, loaded the wounded men into them and moved to Mannington. Another company from Fairmont went to Worthington — About 150 came down from Clarksburg this afternoon, and in company with a body of Home Guards from Simpson's creek, went over to the Coon's run country just after dark. Their object is to form a sort of ring hunt and close in on Righter's posse. I think the expedition will be successful.

One incident occurred at Righter's, at the sacking of the premises, that I must not omit. Our troops had one Banks Corban (a noted rebel) prisoner. While they were guarding him, he (being on horseback) started off as if to escape. They commanded him to half twice, but he paid no attention. They again told him to stop or they would shoot him from his horse. Instead of complying he put spurs to his horse and attempted to escape. The captain ordered his men to fire on him, when about a hundred obeyed, at least fifty balls striking him in the back, and nearly cutting him in two. He fell from his horse, lifeless, not knowing what hurt him.

The Intelligencer remarks, editorially, that Nay is supposed to be mortally wounded, and that four or five of his friends were fired on and three killed. The property destroyed at Righter's was very valuable. The residence was a very fine one, and the horses and other stock on the farm, (which is one of the best in Marion county,) are of superior quality. Mr. R. lived like a prince, but now all is destroyed.

Hessian Villainy.

A Yankee, named Stephens, Adjutant of one of the Vermont Regiments, thus speaks of his exploits while on the road to Great Bethel:

On reaching the bend of the road I took a survey of the rear, to "see what I might see," and discovered a single soldier coming toward me, and waited for him to come up.--I found it was Clark, of the Bradford company. Before he reached me, I observed a horseman coming at full speed towards me.--On reaching the house he turned in, which induced me to think him a Secessionist. I ordered Clark to cover him with his rifle, and, revolver in hand, ordered him to dismount and surrender. He cried out, "Who are you?" answer, "Vermont!" "Then raise your piece, Vermont; I am Col. Duryea, of the Zouaves;" and so it was. His gay looking red boys just appeared turning the corner of the road, coming towards us. He asked me the cause of the firing in the rear, and whose premises we were on. I told him he knew the first as well as I did, but as to the last could give full information; that the house belonged to one Adjutant Whiting, who, just before, had sent a bullet whizzing by me, and shot one of my boys, and that my greatest pleasure would be to burn the rascal's house in payment. "Your wish will be gratified at once," said the Colonel. "I am ordered by Gen. Butler to burn every house whose occupant or owner fires upon our troops. Burn it." He leaped from his horse, and I upon the steps, and by that time three Zouaves were with me. I ordered them to try the door with the outs of their guns; down went the door, and in we went. A well packed traveling-bag lay upon a mahogany table. I tore it open with the hopes of finding a revolver, but did not. The first thing I took out was a white linen coat; I laid it on the table, and Colonel Duryea put a lighted match to it. Other clothing was added to the pile, and soon we had a rousing fire. Before leaving I went into the large parlor in the right wing of the house; it was perfectly splendid. A large room with a tapestry carpet, a nice piano, a fine library of miscellaneous books, rich sofas, elegant chairs with superior needle-work wrought bottoms, what-nots in the corners, loaded with articles of luxury, taste and refinement, and upon a mahogany centre-table lay a Bible and a lady's portrait. The last two articles I took, and have them now in my possession. I also took a decanter of most excellent old brandy from the sideboard, and left the burning house.

The last number of the Winchester Virginian contains the following:

When Lincoln's thieves crossed the Potomac river, at Williamsport, they visited the house of a wealthy gentleman, of Berkeley county, named Cunningham, who, with his family, (except a large number of negroes,) left the premises. The rogues ransacked the house from top to bottom, taking everything that suited their fancy. In the eating line, they went so far as to take old hen turkeys off their nests (poor as Job's) and cooked the eggs which had been set on for weeks. A large tub of sour milk, in which the ladies had been soaking petticoats, for whitening purposes, the starved puppies drank up as voraciously as ever famished hounds lapped butter-milk.

They endeavored to persuade the negroes to leave their master, but the Africans were so disgusted with their conduct and filtby appearance, that they scorned to have anything to do with such trash. One of the blacks stole off some valuable papers belonging to his master and hid them, to save them from spoliation by the wretched vandals.

Attempt to Assassinate.

--On Thursday last, as Mr. Wm. Rhett was returning in a buggy from his farm, not far from Charleston, he was fired upon by a person concealed on the opposite side of the road, near theSix mile House. A portion of the charge, which was large-sized duck shot, entered his back, left arm and left leg, wounding him in a serious and painful manner. Although he heard the discharge of the piece and felt a shock, he was not immediately conscious of being shot. A man of large size and dark complexion was observed to run off by a person riding a little distance behind. Circumstances point strongly to a laborer employed on a neighboring farm, who had recently been brought before a magistrate for trespasses by Mr. Rhett, as the perpetrator of the crime, and he has been arrested and lodged in jail.--Charleston Mercury.

Starving out.

--The crop of wheat in the Valley of Virginia, from all that we have seen and heard, will be decidedly the best that has been harvested for the last ten years. It not only stands uncommonly thick upon the ground, but it is of a very superior quality. The corn, owing to a very wet spring, is backward; but an unusual quantity has been planted, and, with a continued good season, a very heavy yield may be anticipated. The idea of starving out the South is amusing. After supplying the wants of all our people, we would have sufficient left to feed the half-starved, lantern-jawed hyenas of the North, with such prodigality as to kill them all in six months with apoplexy.--Winchester Republican.

Execution.

--The Pensacola Tribune, of the 25th ult., says: "Two notorious characters, Medlock and Etheridge, who, in the capacity of Murrell men, have been infesting the counties adjoining the State line of Alabama and Florida, were on Sunday last, about , hung by citizens several miles from this city, on the line of the Railroad. Medlock had been confined in jail in Pensacola, several months ago, but escaped. There were about 40 or 50 persons present at the hanging, and we learn that everything was conducted very well. The trap-door was thrown by a negro. The citizens of our county will no doubt be relieved now, that these men are executed."

Five hundred Dollars reward.

--M. S. Hedrick, the agent in New Orleans of the Virginia Sewing Machine Company, offers five hundred dollars reward for the capture and delivery into his hands of the flag presented by the Wheeler & Wilson sewing machine company, of New York, to Company D. Thirteenth Regiment New York State Militia.--This presents a fine opportunity for some of our gallant volunteers in Virginia of making a pile, when they come in contact with the New York Sepoys.

Local matters. Destructive fire.

--The alarm of fire at evening was caused by a dense volume of smoke proceeding from the interior of the Penitentiary, which was found to be caused by the burning of the carpenter shop attached to the institution, and the flames spreading, in the absence of any means for its prevention, soon set fire to the other large shops located in proximity to the above, which, after burning for several hours, were, with their contents, reduced to ashes. The loss to the State we should judge to be at least fifty thousand dollars, the greater part of which might have been saved had water been abundant. The location of the State's prison is peculiarly unfortunate in respect to its means of obtaining water for extinguishing conflagrations that may be set agoing by the machinations of convicts. The fire yesterday evening was the work of some one of the inmates, no doubt.--The prisoners at the time of the above casualty were doing good service to the State and Southern Confederacy, by manufacturing goods for the use of the army. We presume that their exertions will be put at an end for some time to come. That is the reason, no doubt, that incited some one of them to fire the building. The burning of the Penitentiary workshops is a great loss to the State at this juncture — more so than such an occurrence could possibly have been happening at any other time.--We did not hear of the escape of any of the prisoners. Col. Pendleton, the worthy Superintendent, exerted himself with zeal and effect to prevent the spread of the flames. He was aided by a large number of volunteer citizens, as well as soldiers. It will be impossible, we presume, to supply the loss of looms in the weaving departments, the machines having been obtained in New York. A violent rain which fell during the fire, tended a little to stay its progress.

Mayor's Court, yesterday.

--The Mayor yesterday detained for further examination John Ross and Jackson Palmer, charged with stabbing Augustus P. Girard in the back with a bayonet. The complainant did not make his appearance.--Henry R. Beasley, Tim Hogan, Jas. Gitrille, Dan Mitchell, Geo. Lott, Mike Winters, Jas. Ryan, and Jno. Ryan, arrested for various drunks and acts consequent thereon, were admonished and delivered to their officers, being soldiers.--Jas. D. Founkhold, arrested for chasing people out of Palmore's drinking saloon with a drawn sabre, was detained for want of surety of the peace.--Patrick H. Connell was committed for a breach of the peace.--Charles, slave of Mrs. Jas. Ellett, was ordered 30 lashes for breaking into Philip Bergheimer's store and stealing $40. Edward Fitzgerald, charged with robbing a slave of $7, was committed to jail until the 2d of July.--Blackstone, slave of Henry Thweatt, was ordered 30 lashes for assaulting Wm. Maxwell in the street with a brick.--Eleven negroes, arrested for vagrancy, non payment of taxes, &c., were sent to jail, where, as the prospects opens for their being put to work, they will doubtless purge themselves of the charge of vagrancy by paying their taxes, and thus escape work. "Sensible to the last."

Reported death of a citizen

--Messrs. Blair & Chamberlain, of this city, received a telegraphic dispatch yesterday from Lieut. Richard B. Kennon, stating that Mr. Henry Haines, (son of Garland Haines, Esq., of Henrico county,) a member of the Governor's Guard, had been killed Sunday , by the enemy, while out scouting near Fairfax Court-House. In reply to a message whether a burial case should be sent for his remains, a reply was received that it was not then necessary, as his body had not been recovered. This suggests the possibility that the unfortunate casualty mentioned did not take place. This wears an air of probability, because at the time the intelligence of the death of Mr. H. was received it was also rumored that his two companions had been captured by the enemy. He may also have been captured.

Hospital at Masons' Hall,
25th street
, Church Hill.

--This hospital was opened about four weeks ago, when it received thirty-six sick men from Col. Faunin's Arkansas Regiment. All of these except two have recovered and gone to join their comrades, near Aquia Creek. Numerous other patients from other companies have come and gone, making, probably, about one hundred who have left the hospital.--About forty are there now.

Only two deaths have occurred--one of these was Patrick O'Riley, of the Hampden Artillery, of Richmond, who died in twenty-four hours, from injuries received on his head by a fall from his horse at Griffin's Spring — The other, Mr. Mears, of Arkansas, died soon after he was brought to the hospital, from a complication of diseases. Private donations of food, delicacies and money, are welcome at the hospital.

The people of Church and Union Hills, by their care and labors for the Tennesseeans at the Hall of Company G, and the Temperance Hall, have given themselves a lasting title to the esteem and gratitude of those who received their timely aid, and indeed of all who love our country and its brave defenders. The contributions of means and personal attendance at the Masons' Hall, shows that the charities of this part of the city are not exhausted, in further proof of which we can state that parties are ready to re-open the Temperance Hall as a hospital whenever necessary.

Many of the sick soldiers have been also quartered at private houses among the good people aforesaid, where they have been attended with the care of near relatives.

Interesting from the Potomac Division.

--A gentleman who has been engaged for some time past in perilous scouting duty in the Potomac Division of the Confederate Army, presented us yesterday with a splinter knocked from a tree by a Federal cannon ball, opposite Williamsport, Md. The ball was fired from the Maryland side, grazed the toll-house on the Virginia side, and struck the tree about a mile distant from the river. The same gentleman informs us that one of our pickets, (a member of Col. Stewart's Cavalry,) was shot last Thursday, and supposed to be mortally wounded. The ball struck him in the left hip, and passed through his stomach. We did not learn his name.

The cannon ball above spoken of, and a shell that failed to explode, were subsequently found by our soldiers.

The Federalists, about 8,000 strong, were encamped at Williamsport, under Gen. Cadwallader, and were throwing up defences.

Desirable thing.

--From the frequent acts of violence reported as having been committed by parties dressed in "soldier clothes," whereby numbers of worthy men now engaged in the defence of their country are brought into contempt by no fault of their own, it would seem judicious, as far as it can be done, to keep the disorganizing elements under strict surveillance. The officers strive zealously to do this, but cannot always succeed. Their companies sometimes are brought into disagreeable prominence by acts which they would be the last to countenance and first to punish. If any more disorders are reported on the part of persons who claim to be military men to escape the penalty of their misdeeds, the general encampments now located in this city will be removed to some suitable place four or five miles in the country. This has been determined on, as we hear. Such a course will materially increase the discomforts of those who have peacefully conducted themselves, yet, it would act as an effectual extinguisher on the rowdy tendencies of those who, though few in number, contrive to give a bad name to all their brother soldiers.

Attention, friends of liberty!

--We direct particular attention to the advertisement under this head proposing the formation in this city of a new volunteer company, to be attached to the First Regiment of Virginia Volunteers. We understand that Mr. James Mitchell, a citizen of Richmond, and a son of that distinguished friend of the South, John Mitchell, the Irish patriot, is interesting himself in the formation of this company. This is not only a guaranty that the company will be speedily raised, but that they will be put on an effective footing. An invocation to the "Friends of Liberty," from a son of John Mitchell, cannot pass unheeded.

Mastered in.

--The Gards Lafayette, the fine company that arrived here from Mobile two weeks since, were mastered into the service of the Confederate States yesterday.--The Gards, mostly composed of citizens of French birth, are armed, with Minnie muskets, which they know very well how to use. The company holds a prominent position among the Mobile military.

A Sorry spectacle.

--The company of human beings which may be seen almost any morning making its way from the police station at the Old Market to the tribunal of his Honor the Mayor, presents to every sensitive mind a sad and mournful aspect. We doubt whether such a procession ought to be permitted to pass uncovered through our streets.--There would be an appropriateness in shutting them up in a large box on wheels, or a hearse, and thus conducting them along unknown, people might think the dead were going to their long home; and they would not be much mistaken, for many of these are indeed morally dead.

"Lost to virtue lost to manly thought."

We see in these mournful processions the remains of female beauty, the relice of female virtue, the fragments of genius, and talent, and energy, and hope, with the bloated, bruised bodies which were once instinct with life and all that made life beautiful. It may be, some are not dead, but only sick temporarily. It might reclaim them to hide them from the idle gaze of the streets, and to warm into life by a little considerate kindness the latent sparks of self-respect. It surely hardens them to expose them in their shame.

Reading matter for the soldiers.

--There is a great scarcity here of tracts and small religious books for circulation among the soldiers.

To supply this deficiency, some persons have resorted to the distribution of religious newspapers — a kind of reading more acceptable, we dare say, to most of the soldiers than tracts, and which, with a little attention on the part of their editors to this end in their selections, may be made quite as useful as the tract.

We suppose, indeed we are sure, that the publishers of any of the three religious papers in our city will, if notice is given them in time, furnish any number of extra copies, any week, at low prices.

We know of no other way how, for the same amount of money as they will cost, so large a mass of reading matter of this kind may be obtained, or one which is likely to be more useful by attracting and instructing the leisure hours of our men.

Fine Regiment.

--The Fifth Regiment of North Carolina Volunteers arrived in Richmond yesterday morning via the Petersburg Railroad. The Regiment is composed of the choicest material. It comprises twelve companies, embracing an aggregate of eleven hundred and fifty men. The regimental officers are Col. McKenny, Lieut. Col. Ibrie, and Maj. Green, all good and experienced officers. Immediately on the arrival of the Regiment, they went into camp in the vicinity of the York River Railroad Depot, and being under marching orders left in the afternoon. The men of this Regiment have no reason to complain of the manner in which they are armed and equipped. They are capable of meeting the enemy with any weapon with which he may see fit to advance. Their muskets are of the latest and most approved description of that weapon.

Personal.

Meredith, Louisiana. At the Spotswood House--Capt. Wm. H. Cook, Wm. Gibboney, Wytheville; Stephen Neale, Md.; Chapman J. Leigh, Va.; Wilkins Bruce, Halifax, &c; L. P. Payne, Balt.; W. B. Collins, Portsmouth; Rev. J. Grammer, Halifax; W. Brantley, Ala.; John M. Taylor, La., and others.

Bowels cut open.

--John S. Roane, a tailor, had his abdomen cut open, so that his bowels protruded, on Sunday , near the late residence of Aggy Peters, in Butchertown. It appeared that Roane saw a number of soldiers disputing in the locality alluded to, and hoping to prevent a disturbance drew near and requested them to desist. One of them replied to the interference by plunging a knife in Roane's bowels. Dr. Jackson was afterwards called in, and succeeded in replacing the entrails and sewing up the gap.

Election of an officer.

--We are informed on good authority, that as soon as the intelligence reached the State Convention yesterday morning [communicated by a member from Fredericksburg, who visited his family on Saturday,] of the gallant and Paul Jones like daring of Col. R. Thomas, that in secret session he was unanimously confirmed as a full Colonel in the Provisional Army of Virginia. Col. T. was present in the Convention afterwards, and appeared as modest in demeanor as he is daring in notion.

Mention was made yesterday of the bursting of a musket on Thursday of last week in the hands of Mr. Jno. Bouer, a member of the Tredegar Battalion. The accident occurred as Mr. B. was trying his piece preparatory to a parade. The gun burst into many pieces, and blew off Mr. B.'s left hand entirely, causing intense agony, the surgeon's knife being requisite to remove the pieces of the limb which did not fall a prey to the force of the explosion. The explosion was caused by a defect in the musket.

Getting better.

--The condition of Mr. John Lindsay, recently wounded by a pistol ball through the abdomen at the Dime Saloon,

, was regarded yesterday as much more favorable to an early recovery than at any time since the wound was inflicted.

Where located.

--The Confederate prison depot is located on the South side of

Main street
, two squares below the County Court-House, and contains now from 75 to 100 of Old Abe's disciples. It is of course carefully guarded day and night.

Gone.

--The 44th Regiment of Virginia Volunteers, Col. Scott Hubbard commanding, left this city yesterday evening about . The regiment embraces ten companies, among them the Richmond Zonaves, Edward McConnell, Captain.

Paying up.

--The financial departments of City, State and Confederate Governments were filled with coupon holders yesterday, receiving the payment of July interest on the bonds of the respective authorities named.

Marriage licenses.

--Sixteen marriage licenses were issued by the Clerk of the Hustings Court during the month of June. The business of getting married is not at all interrupted by the progress of the war.

Welcome.

--A fine company of Cavalry from Natchez, Mississippi, arrived in Richmond on Saturday.

Discharged.

--Nine or more negroes arraigned yesterday for vagrancy and non-payment of taxes, were discharged by the Mayor.

Lieut. Walker, of the Second, New Hampshire Regiment, who was killed on the New Jersey Railroad, was butted on the 26th ult., in Concord, N. H., with as much pomp as possible.

The machinery of the Federal steamer Colorado broke down while at sea, on the 20th of June. It had been "tampered with," at the Charleston (Mass.) Navy-Yard.

Warren Larkins, a well known citizen of Montgomery, and one of the Alabama volunteers, died at Norfolk on Tuesday.

A little girl died in Brooklyn, N. Y., recently, from eating wild lettuce, and another was in a dangerous condition.

Gen. Huger, commanding at Norfolk, has issued an order for the observance of the 4th of July at that post.

Hon. George W. Brown died suddenly, on Sunday last, of paralysis, at his residence, near Duncansville, Thomas county, Ga.

Jacob B. McGwire, a lawyer, of Macon, Ga., has been arrested for negro stealing and breach of trust.

E. J. Johnston & Co., of Macon, Ga., have fabricated a handsome sword, designed as a present to President Davis.

James D. and Wm. Carson, arrested in St. Louis for treason, have been admitted to ball in the sum of $25,000 each.

Col. McMillan is raising a regiment in Northeast Georgia, which will soon be ready to take the field.

Why is Brigadier General Scheuck like Burlingame? Because he was rejected at Vienna.

The marriage of the Princess Alice with Prince Louis of House is not to take place this year, but will be celebrated early in 1861.

The question of the celibacy of the priests is strongly debated in the French papers, which generally pronounce against it.

George Hassitina, editor of the London American, is in Washington.

Lieut. Geo. V. Alexander, of the 1st Regiment of Maryland Zouaves, reached Richmond on yesterday morning, with forty odd Lincolnite prisoners-of-war, captured on the Potomac early Saturday . It appears that the Zouaves Regiment has been for some time past in princess of formation by Col. R. Thomas, of Richard, Lieut. Alexander, (Adjutant,) Lieut. F. Gibson, and others, in Baltimore.

A short time since, Col. Thomas went from Baltimore to Philadelphia in disguise and procured a supply of arms. Himself and comrades then conceived the project of capturing the St. Nicholas a large steamer in the employ of the "General Government," running between Baltimore and Washington. The boat started at on Friday from her wharf in Baltimore. Previous thereto Col. Thomas went aboard with 12 men — the latter a passengers, and their commander dressed as a French lady. The vessel get under way and stopped at Point Lookout, where, according to the plan previously agreed on, Lieut. Alexander, with another detachment of men, came on board and secured passage for Washington. By accident (!) Lieut. Alexander went into the cabin of the steamer and recognized the French lady (!) as an old acquantance from Paris. Both Thomas and Alexander speaking the language fluently, they found no difficulty in maturing their plan of operations. During the conversation that ensued between the French lady and her acquaintance, instructions were given as to how the party should proceed. The arms, which had previously been carefully baded and concealed, were made ready for instant possession. At on Saturday , the time for striking the blow having arrived, Col. Thomas threw off his disguise, appeared in his uniform, and ordering his men to do their duty, the steamer in five minutes was a prize to the forces of the Confederate States. The Captain and crew surrendered without striking a blow, and were confined without trouble.--They appeared over whelmed with surprise.

Captain Geo. N. Hollins, late United States Navy, who had gone aboard at Point Lookout, then assumed command of the steamer and ran her into Cone river, expecting to meet the Tennesses Regiment and jointly commence further operations against the enemy. The Tennessesans, however, did not arrive on the ground till late Saturday . It was then too late for any demonstration up the river as originally intended, and the steamer was headed down the stream. On her passage she captured two schooners and one brig. Each had a crew of about ten men, who were taken prisoners.

One of the vessels was loaded with 3,500 bage of coffee, another with anthracite coal, and mother with ice. The steamer St. Nicholas is a first class boat, 275 feet long, side wheel.

All of the prizes were safely towed to the month of the Rappahannock, and thence to Predericksburg. Their value is roughly estimated at three hundred and Seventy-five Thousand Dollars.

The captains of the respective vessels, with their crews, including several negroes, are now lodged in the prison depot on

I write to inform you of the partially successful issue of a most daring adventure which has been concocted at this place, and executed on the Potomac River and the Bay. Capt. Hollins has just returned from the expedition this evening, and from his report and from personal observation I have collected the following circumstances attending the affair.

Friday our town was thrown into great commotion by a rumor being spread that a secret expedition was forming, whose object was unknown. Men were seen gathering in small groups at the corners of the streets, conversing on this all-absorbing topic. Some three or four days previously, a gentleman of the name of Thomas was seen about the streets with his head shaved very close and dressed in the Zouave style. He attracted upon himself universal observation, and was even suspected by some of being a spy. He was evidently affecting a character very adverse to his true one. He, it has since been ascertained, is a native of Maryland. He had learned that the St. Nicholas was soon to start from that port to Washington, and had come on to concert with Capt. Hollins a most perilous and important expedition. The object of the expedition was no less than the capture of the Pawnes. It was to have been accomplished as follows, and nothing but a stroke of Providence could have made them fall of their object:

Capt. Hollins and Mr. Thomas were to go to Baltimore, take passage with twenty-five or thirty chosen men on board the St. Nicholas, and as soon as she had entered the Potomac and arrived at the mouth of Cone River, to overpower the crew and embark five hundred Tennesseeans, who were to meet them at this point. They were then to sail up the Potomac with the United States flag waving at their mast-head, and then perform the grand act in the drama. The latter was disconcerted by an unlooked for accident.

According to the preconcerted plan, the Tennesseeans left this place Friday , carrying with them ten surgeons. Hollins and Thomas went to Baltimore, and embarked on board the St. Nicholas with twenty-five or thirty of the most adventuresome tars they could find. Thomas was dressed in female habiliments, and was assiduously attended to by her attentive beau, Capt. Hollins. But, alas for human hopes! While everything prospered and all were expecting a happy issue of the affair, it was reported that it could not then be carried into effect.--Capt. Hollins determined, however, not to lose all his labor. So when they were at the month of the Potomac, at a preconcerted signal his men rose up, took possession of the steamer, and steering straight for the month of Cone River, they soon reached the place pre-arranged as the point where the Tennesseeans were to join them. Hollins informed them of the failure of their original design. He then returned to the bay and scoured it, capturing the following prizes in addition to the St. Nicholas; a vessel laden with 3,500 bags of coffee, another laden with ice, and a third with coal. They have all been brought within the protection of our batteries. The St. Nicholas with one of the vessels is in sight of our wharf.

This success has illuminated the countenances of our townsmen with exceeding joy. Their anxious and care-worn faces of yesterday are lit up with a luminous expression of joy and satisfaction. The crew of the St. Nicholas, consisting of twenty free negroes and nineteen white persons, are in our jail, and will, in all probability, be sent to Richmond.

The ladies generally are very zealous in administering to the wants of these noble young men, who have left their friends and loved ones to fight for our homes and firesides. A good many of the sick are cantened out among the citizens, some houses taking as many as four or five. There is a noble emulation among all our ladies who shall most alleviate the sorrows and languishings of the poor sick who are now beneficiaries of our kindness.

The militia of Spotsylvania are drafted, and will be sent to a post of duty.

[from our Special Correspondent.] Fredericksburg, July 1, 1861.

Another engagement occurred at Mathias' Point on Thursday , in which nine of the enemy were killed and many others wounded. Our troops took a large number of picks, spades and sand-bags, and left the field unscathed, as usual. From the accounts which have reached me, I judge the enemy numbered about fifty, and landed for the purpose of erecting some kind of defence. The accounts are so vague that I am unwilling to give any statement positively, except that of the number killed and the quantity of implements found in the deserted boat. Captain Ward, of the Freeborn, was killed.

Our citizens were thrown into quite a furor of excitement yesterday afternoon, about , by the arrival at the wharf of the steamer St. Nicholas, of the Baltimore and Washington line, and at a very late hour of the night the wharf was crowded with those dubious about her identity, and curious to know the circumstances under which she came.

For several days past, the town has been highly excited with curiosity about the secret expedition which left here Friday , and even now the excitement of the ignorant in regard to it has not abated in the least.--The arrival of this steamer was the cause, very naturally, of alarm to some, while it increased the intense curicsity of others. The circumstances connected with her transfer from the Baltimore and Washington line to one of the ports of the Confederate States, may be summed up as follows:

The steamer St. Nicholas left the wharf at Baltimore Thursday, about , having on board about eighty passengers, and some merchandize. When she reached one of the Maryland capes the Captain and crew suddenly found themselves in the hands of some "Rebels," and were necessarily obliged to surrender in the name of the Confederate Government. Resistance was useless, and the Captain, seeing how futile would be any such attempt, quietly submitted to being deposed.

The gentleman who conducted this affair deserves a great deal of credit, and it is only for important considerations (which he will understand) that I can forbear calling his name. He will receive the reward due him from another and more pleasing source.

The steamer, after undergoing a change of commanders and crew, proceeded to Cone river to await reinforcements and to execute the remainder of the mission for which she was captured; but owing to some mismanagement or misunderstanding, was compelled to leave undone the most important part of the programme. She left Cone river Saturday, and while proceeding down the Bay to the mouth of the Rappahannock, captured two schooners--one named Margaret, of New York, ladened with coal from Alexandria, to Staten Island; the other, Mary Pierce, of Boston, ladened with 268 tons of ice, for Washington. The latter proves a very valuable acquisition, as our stock of ice is growing very small. The Virginia captured a schooner, the name of which I could not learn, ladened with coffee, from Rio, for Baltimore; and, as the neutrality of Maryland has been recognized, I presume her cargo will be purchased. The Captain of the schooner Margaret is a Virginian, and should be dealt with as he deserves. The Captain of the schooner Mary Pierce is undoubtedly a Yankee.

The report of fighting at Mathias' Point has again reached me, and I am inclined to believe that we shall soon hear of a glorious victory on our part from that place. M.

From Norfolk.[Special Correspondence of the Dispatch.] Norfolk, Va., July 1, 1861.

It is evident that desertions from the Lincolnites at Old Point have recently taken place. Several small boats have floated ashore at Sewell's Point with muffied oars, which warrants the conclusion. They have been secured by our forces, and appear to be boats belonging to some large ship, probably the Cumberland. It is likely the deserters made their escape at night, and after landing some distance up the bay, set these boats adrift. Capt. Ferguson, commander of a company at the above Point, came into our city on Friday and brings us this statement.

Mr. Thompson, of whom mention was made in a former letter, states that the infamous Pendergrast presents a lock of depression which bespeaks of deepest sorrow, and it is said that his own associates do not respect him, and are actually afraid to place the least confidence in him.

There is great sickness, I am told, prevailing at Old Point. This confirms the statement in a previous letter of the hospital being crowded with the sick. Two daughters and a son-in-law of Capt. Guy, of our city, on their way to Norfolk, were detained at Old Point by the Lincolnites, and sent back to Baltimore. The kindness and courtesy extended to those in our city who wish to join the North, is in striking contrast with the illtreatment our people receive at their hands.

One of Gen. Butler's female informants, availing herself of the last flag of truce from this city, was found to be the bearer of two letters from men in Portsmouth to Gen. Butler at Old Point. The letters gave full accounts of our numbers, description of our fortifications, of points preguable — in fact, an entire description of everything available to the enemy. Among other things, they stated that free speech was restricted here — that they dare not utter sentiments treasonable to the South, for fear of arrest; but that they held a "thinking club," held meetings often and thought what they pleased. They also gave the names of the immortal 75 who voted against the Ordinance of Secession, and urged an immediate attack upon Norfolk. The names of the writers were signed to them, which caused the arrest of one of them, named C. W. Bryan, who is now in the city jail, and will be turned over, I understand, to military authority. The other one will be caught.

The woman having in her possession these dispatches was allowed to depart without turther search, but we warn her not to return.

I learn that Capt. McCarrick has captured another prize in North Carolina. In the capture of the first one, he was chased by a Federal steamer, but she was not swift enough to overtake him. She had just transferred arms to some point and was returning, when she was taken.

There are two Southerners, sons of gentlemen in Portsmouth, on board the Minnesota, now in our waters, who cannot get away, and who are not allowed even the privilege of writing to their parents. They have taken the oath and are not allowed to go further than the Fortress, at Old Point.

I hear that a flag of truce will leave our city to-day, when all who wish to leave us had better do so. We know of several who will leave, but we wish it was so that all unfriendly to us would go. There are those among us who should be forced from our city; men who voted against the Ordinance of Secession and who are now employed here.--They have by their votes — not to say their actions — attested deflautly their position, and ought not to be allowed to remain. It is against our interest — at least no good can result from their presence.

Heavy firing was heard at Sewell's Point yesterday. I have not heard the particulars.

The Richmond Grays, I regret to say, will probably leave us in a day or two for another point, where their services will be more needed.

Inspection at all the camps took place yesterday. Our troops at this station are in good health and lively spirits.

Luna. Correspondence of the Richmond Dispatch.affairs in Loudoun county. Leesburg, June 27, 1861.

The arrival of Col. Sloan's Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers at a post in this vicinity, has had the happiest effect already upon the Union sentiment in Loudoun, and the original Secessionists among us are greatly rejoiced that the Palmetto State has fulfilled their expectations, and sent up her sons to fight in our common cause.

Major Evans, of South Carolina, has been assigned to the command of Col. Sloan's Regiment and Col. Hunton's 8th Regiment of Virginia Volunteers. He has assumed the command, and now ranks as General in the Confederate Army.

All quiet now in this neighborhood. There was a fight at White's Ferry, near Leesburg, last week, between Capt. Rogers' Artillery and a portion of Col Stone's command, on the opposite shore of the Potomac. The firing was kept up for two days, but only one man was wounded on our side, while several of the enemy were killed by the fire from Captain Rogers' guns. There are various reports as to the loss of the Yankees, and I understand they admit six killed on their side.

We are just commencing our harvest, and there is a magnificent crop of wheat. We have a good prospect for corn.

Loudoun has more fine cattle than any county in Eastern Virginia, and we can supply an army of 50,000 men for twelve months, if we can secure the present crops. B.

Correspondence of the Richmond Dispatch.letter from a Farmville boy — military affairs. Farmville, June 30, 1861.

I have been looking over your good Daily for the last month or two, and have seen but few letters from Farmville. Supposing you have no regular correspondent here, although a boy I take the liberty of saying a few words as to matters about our quiet little town — The only thing that rouses our few remaining citizens from the lethargy into which they have fallen, is the war news. They are expecting to hear of a battle in the vicinity of Alexandria or Manassas. If Lincoln's cut-throats were to meet our brave boys in open field, we could whip them two to one; but old Scott and his master know that too well, and will not try it. They have heard of the big battle at Bethel, where we whipped them four to one, and they are getting a little more cautious.

There has a large number of troops passed our town since the first of May. The greater part of them are from Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. The Southwestern counties of Virginia have sent a large number, and our little county of Prince Edward has also done her duty; she has eight hundred voters, and has sent eight companies--one cavalry and seven infantry, and our patriotic citizens are now raising an artillery company. Two of the infantry went from Farmville; they were Capt. Booker's company, one hundred men, and Capt. Cobb's company, eighty men. Our town has a population of one hundred and fifty voters, and has sent one hundred and eighty men. Well done for Farmville. We will have plenty of men, if every county would do as well as Prince Edward. The ladies, too, deserve credit — for the last month they have been diligently engaged in making tents and other things for our soldiers.

Alpha. A man cut to pieces by a mowing Machine.

--A shocking accident occurred at West Hartford, Conn., on Wednesday , by which Mr. Joseph C Sisson lost his life in a terrible manner. Mr. S. was driving his horses attached to a mowing machine, and by some accidentally means fell in such manner as to be thrown in front of the cutting-blade. The horses could not be stopped in season to save him from a frightful laceration. One leg was cut nearly off, the bone being almost severed and the great artery divided. The flesh, tendons and musoles were cut from his thick on the other leg, and he was otherwise fright-fully mangled. He lived less than two hours, and died from the loss of blood.

From Petersburg. [Special Correspondence of the Dispatch.] Petersburg, June 30, 1861.

The refreshing rains of the last two or three days have had the effect of reviving animal as well as vegetable life. For several days the heat has been debilitating, and the earth parched by a rather protracted drought. It has at length received a very copious watering.

There seems to be a general good feeling among the farmers of the South-Side counties, many of whom I have conversed with. They have reaped fine crops of grain, and there will certainly be no scarcity of bread; but nobody anticipates high prices for the present.

The passage of troops through this city for several weeks past has been constant and the numbers large, but as many of them went on to your city, I presume you have had good views of them. That portion of the Hampton Legion which passed through here a day or two since, is a splendid body of men. They are all young, and most of them occupy high social positions at home. The whole Legion comprises about eleven companies, and thirteen hundred men. In the Edgefield Hussars, a splendidly equipped and mounted cavalry company of the Legion, Col. Wade Hampton, the commander, has two sons.--There is no doubt this gallant body of troops will be able to render signal service in any field to which they may be assigned.

An active Vigilance Committee, consisting of forty members, among whom may be found many of our first citizens, and all responsible men, has been recently organized. They have the power to make arrests and try before a court of their own appointment. The object is to keep a strict watch over persons of suspicious character, and several arrests have been already made. The members of the committee are out every night.

It has sometimes been the case that soldiers have passed through this city hungry and worn down by fatigue, without having their wants properly attended to. Measures have been taken to guard against the recurrence of any such untoward circumstance for the future. An association of gentlemen has been formed, and ample means provided, for feeding any number that may arrive. Col. Hampton's Legion was handsomely entertained at the Cool Spring, on Dunn's Hill.--The Fifth Regiment of North Carolina Volunteers, which arrived this afternoon, was also abundantly supplied with eatables. A member of the Chatham Rifies, of this regiment, deserted some ten days ago, but was captured near Yorktown, with a complete plan of the works at that important place upon his person, with other data of Southern affairs. He is now here in charge of his company and will be taken to Yorktown, there to be dealt with according to military law.

A very superior article of bowle-knives is being manufactured by Uriah Wells, of this city. The blades are from 10 to 20 inches in length, according to size, highly polished and of the best metal. They have given so much satisfaction, that Mr. Wells has received orders from numerous companies as well as individuals; he has a large force occupied in their manufacture.

Two Northerners, believed to be spies, were arrested here yesterday. They were on route for Norfolk, intending when opportunity offered to escape to Fort Monroe. They were overhauled just on the point of departure One says he is from Philadelphia and the other Maryland. Their names are G. W. Rider and John Carmen, both of whom registered false names at the hotel here. Their examination before the Mayor but confirmed the suspicion of their being spies. What will be done with them, I am not informed; they are in jail and will be kept there until something more can be found out about them.

Mon Cœur. Correspondence of the Richmond Dispatch.departure of "Dixie Greys"--crops--"What makes the Hessian Fly?" Salem, Va., June 29, 1861.

Our fourth volunteer company, the "Dixie Greys," commanded by Captain A. J. Deyule, left us yesterday morning to rendezvous at Lynchburg. The larger counties may send more soldiers into the service than "Little Roanoke," but I will venture to say that none have sent better ones. The "Dixie Greys" number seventy-four rank and file, and I engage for them that they will do their full share in defending the Old Dominion from the invasion of Old Abe and his Lieutenant General.

In this county the weather has been very dry for several weeks, which has affected the growing crop of corn to some extent, and I am afraid will seriously affect the oat crop, though it has enabled the farmers to secure an unusual amount of hay.--In this, as in many other productions, Virginia ought to be wholly independent of Yadkeedom, and I hope to see a great deal of the present fine crop of hay sent to market in bales. A copious rain last night has put a new face on vegetation of every kind, and if the season is hereafter favorable large crops of corn will be made. Very few persons have planted any tobacco, and these few have been nindered by the dry weather, so that this fine tobacco region will not furnish much of the weed this season. The wheat harvest is now in progress, and promises a good yield, though there is some complaint of the smut. This reminds me of an old enemy to wheat (the Hessian fly,) which is thought to have been introduced by the Hessians in the Revolutionary war. The same enemy, under a different form, seems lately to have been committing ravages on the wheat fields around Hampton, and in the neighborhood of Great Bethel. Some thought it was the army worm, but those who ought to know, say that General Butler's Hessians were the evil doers.--The farmers of the Peninsula have at last found both the cause and cure of the complaint; for when the question is asked, "What makes the Hessian fly?" the answer is, "Col. Magruder's masked battery."

In examining the other day a history of the Mexican war, by the present General Mansfield, (now one of General Scott's right-hand men in Washington city,) I was struck with the following magniloquent laudation of General Scott after the battle of Churubusco: "Before the carnage of another battle, he must make a final effort to stay the iron arm of destruction and reclaim warring nations to the paths of peace. Hence his beautiful letter, expressing the Christian sentiment, 'Enough blood has been shed in this unnatural war.' When the echo of the cannon shall have died away, and the clangor of arms shall have ceased; when the steeled warrior shall have gone to his rest, and the conqueror and the conquered shall lie down together, Christianity will weave her unfading chaplet for the soldier who has ever been true to her highest obligations and benign requirements!" It would be interesting to reproduce the "beautiful letter" above alluded to. I might possibly suggest the inquiry whether this can be the same General Scott who, with this same toady General Mansfield by his side, is now directing an invasion of his native State, and outraging every principle of Christianity, (not to say of humanity,) by the character of the warfare he is waging. Did I not regard Gen. Scott as a monster of ingratitude and deaf to all remonstrance, I would like to ask him, "Has not enough blood been shed in this unnatural war?" J.

Correspondence of the Richmond Dispatch.from Charleston. Charleston, S. C., June 29th, 1861.

Yesterday, being the eighty-fifth anniversary of the battle of Fort Moultrie, was celebrated with unusual eclat. The Moultrie Guard and the Palmetto Guard celebrated the day with target shooting at Mount Pleasant, and in the evening these two companies marched, escorted by the Citadel Cadets, to the Institute Hall, where an oration was delivered by B. R. Carroll, Ecq.

Among the numerous pleasing incidents of the day was the presentation of a neat and handsome flag to the Charleston Zouaves. It was presented in behalf of the givers by Gen. James Simons, who discharged his part quite agreeably.

The flag combines the Confederate and the Palmetto flags. It is made of red, white and blue silk, trimmed with golden fringe. The Union in blue silk. On one side is the motto of the company--"Droit et avant"--encircled by eleven stars, and the reverse has the Palmetto tree, worked in white floss silk, and surmounted by eleven stars.

After the presentation the company marched to the Citadel Square, where they went through quite a fatiguing exercise, which was witnessed by a large concourse of people, including a very large number of the fair sex, who, by their sweet smiles and bright looks, encouraged the Zouaves to do their best, which they certainly did, and everybody was much pleased with the precision with which the different commands were executed.

Several other companies will soon leave here for the seat of war. Major McCready is raising a battalion, of which one company is already in camp and another organizing. They are made up mostly of Irishmen, and if I can judge by the looks of them, they will give Lincoln's hirelings a hard knock whenever they may meet.

We are all expecting stirring news soon from your neighborhood; but there seems to be only one feeling as to the result of any battle, and that is, God being on our side, we need not be afraid of any of the thieves and murderers that chief of robbers, Lincoln, may send against our armies. Ion.

Correspondence of the Richmond Dispatch.the Charlotte Troop. Staunton, Saturday, June 29th, 1861.

After remaining at the Camp of Instruction at Ashland about a month, the Charlotte Troop received marching orders to Huttonsville.

Although we enjoyed many advantages at that place which we cannot have elsewhere, (our friends having visited us almost daily, sent us many boxes of good things, and the officers having been very kind to us,) yet, we received the orders to march with pleasure, knowing that we were needed in another direction for actual service. From Ashland to Staunton we were on the cars twenty-four hours. When we took our horses from the cars they were quite fatigued, not having been fed or watered during the trip. They were soon attended to, and now look much better.

We regret the absence of one of our corps, whom we left sick of fever at Ashland, Mr. D. Shepperson. He will be able to join us in a few weeks, however, as he is recovering his strength rapidly.

Staunton is a delightful place. Our camp is upon a high hill overlooking a beautiful valley, dotted over with tents and alive with soldiers. The Pittsylvania troop, commanded by Capt. Flournov, are with us. Our Captains, Smith and Flournoy, are gallant young officers, and pay every possible attention to the men under their charge. Our Lieutenants are very popular, and promise to make good officers in a very short time — Our friends at home may rest assured that we will do our best to repel the invaders of our soil.

We leave to-morrow morning in good spirits and fine health. Yours, in haste, P.

From Arizona.

--We have the Mesilla Times, of the 8th ult., from which we take the annexed extracts:

This week brings startling intelligence from every quarter of Indian depredations — Ranches are being deserted, whole valleys and mining districts are being abandoned, and the Indians, unchecked, are growing bolder and bolder, and seem to have undertaken a war of extermination. We soon expect to hear the cry of alarm in the Mesilla Valley; indeed, those on the outskirts are removing or doubly guarding their stock. The Apaches are infinitely worse than ever before known.

Some ten days ago forty-four mules were stolen from the San Pedro Station, belonging to the Overland Mail Company. The stock of four or five stations had been collected at this point for safety, and all but eight head were stolen, in broad daylight, while some fifteen men were at the station.

Last week some wagons belonging to Mr. Samuel Bean were attacked within one mile of Pino Alto. The driver fied for safety, abandoning the wagons to the Indians. The Indians shot the oxen and rilled the contents of the wagons, carrying off large quantities of dry goods and such other articles as they wanted, scattering the remainder over the ground. The Indians carried off, among other things, some seventy-five pounds of powder.

They have been constantly hovering about Pino Alto, coming in close vicinity to mining companies and the town, entering corrals at night; and it has become so dangerous that those running arastras have concluded to abandon them for the present, and are driving the stock to safer quarters. Between the Indians and the stampede for the Sierra Capitan Mines, Pino Alto is almost depopulated.

The rancheros of the Mimbres Valley, and at different springs in the vicinity, have been compelled to abandon their half-matured crops and seek a common safety in the Mesilla Valley. Not a solitary white man is left in the Mimbres Valley, which two years since counted thirty or forty ranches.

Two Mexicans were killed belonging to the train of Messrs. Elisburg and Amburg on the 3d, at Cook's Spring. They had been sent back from the train to look for a missing mule. Nine men sent in search of them were also attacked at the same point by the Indians. The Indians succeeded in getting five mules from the train.

A party of emigrants, California bound, were also attacked the same day; but being forewarned were prepared for the red devils, and gave them a warm reception, causing them to beat a retreat.

Mr. H. C. Grovesnor, Superintendent of the Santa Rita Mining Company, and two Mexicans, were killed by the Apaches on the trail between the Santa Rita mine and Fort Buchanan, some two weeks since. Mr. Grovesnor was a lithographer and an old typo, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, where his family reside. He had resided at Arizona several years, and won the golden opinions and confidence of all who knew him.

The remains of Louis Philippe.

--In the sitting of the French Senate on Saturday, 8th June, a petition was read from a private individual, praying that the mortal remains of King Louis Philippe might be removed to France. Count de Beaumont observed that the committee was decidedly of opinion that a mere stranger was not entitled to petition for such an object, and that a member of the Orleans family could alone make the request. Were such an application sent in there was nothing to lead to the belief that it would not be accorded.

Activity of the slave trade.

--A late dispatch from the English Commissary, Judge Crawford, at Havana, just presented to both Houses of Parliament, states "that the slave trade continues to be carried on from this island upon the most extensive scale, and that, so far from it having become odious in the opinion of the public, there are more persons, even of capital and influence, engaged in it than ever." This traffic is now confined to certain narrow geographical limits in Africa, is prosecuted to supply only one market, Cuba, and is carried on largely under one flag, the American.

Honors to a French author.

--At a recent meeting of the five academies of the French Institution, M. Thiers, author of the Consulate and the Empire, was awarded the biennial prize of $4,000 presented by the Emperor, for the work "that most honors the human mind." The vote stood 96 against 50, many of the latter thus acting from a conviction that none of the members should be candidates for prizes, rather than from hostility to M. Thiers, who, satisfied, with the honor, intends to fund the whole sum, the income from which is to be devoted to academic prizes.

Gunpowder

--The Atlanta (Ga.) Confederacy says that the Saltpetre manufactured from the earth of the cave near Kingston, is pronounced by chemists a very superior article. Hon. Mark A. Harden has already made a large quantity of saltpetre, and will at once commence the manufacture of gunpowder on an extensive scale. So great is the supply of saltpetre, and so easily can it be obtained that Mr. Harden is confident of being able to supply powder in the greatest quantities, and at greatly reduced prices. We wish him every success.

Cobb's Legion.

--Tom. Cobb's Legion is rapidly organizing in Georgia for service during the war, and will be composed of four cavalry companies and one of artillery, and six or eight infantry companies. Hon. Thos. R. R. Cobb will be the Colonel, Major Smith, formerly of the U. S. A., Lieutenant Colonel, and -- Cross, also a late U. S. officer, Major. Gov. Brown will arm the entire Legion. The cavalry will have Sharpe's carbines, six shooters and sabres, and the Government will furnish saddles, bridles, housing, martingales, &c.

Man sold for Vageancy.

--A Cincinnati exchange says that a man named Semple, who is connected with one of the oldest and most respectable families in Covington, Ky., but who has degenerated into a mere sot, was sold at public auction by the sheriff on Saturday, for inveterate vagrancy. Andy Herod, jailer, became his purchaser at the sum of one dime, and will have an opportunity to get his money back by Semple's services until the 1st of September next.

From Fortress Monroe.

--At latest accounts everything was quiet at Old Point, and there had been no recent arrivals of troops. It was reported that a column of three thousand troops had been sent from the Fortress on a reconnoissance.

Annexation by England.

--England has lately annexed to her possessions an island in the Pacific called Forming's Island, latitude 30 deg. 49 min. north, longitude 159 deg. 20 min. west. It was done with great formality and much flag raising.

Death of a Sister of Charity.

--Mother Elizabeth, who has been for over a half century a Sister of Charity, died on Sunday at New York. She was one of the first who went to New York, and her life has been spent in works of charity.

Cavour's will.

--By his will Cavour, who was never married, has left the bulk of his property to Elnardo di Cavour, his brother's son, and there is a bequest of 50,000 lire to his native city of Turin, for an infant school.

Col. J. J. Pettigrew, of the First (S. C.) Rifle Regiment, has volunteered as a private in Captain Conner's Company (the Washington Light Infantry) of Hampton's Legion, and has gone with that corps to the seat of war.

Col. Farish Carter, a gentleman extensively and favorably known in Georgia, died a few days ago, at Scotisboro', near Milledgeville, in the 81st year of his age.

Rev. Malcolm Johnston died in Cartersville, Ga., on the evening of the 17th ult.--He was a minister of the Baptist Church, and was very old and infirm.

Kit Carson had a fall of some two hundred feet over a precipice, in Utah, last April, but alighted in a snow bank and escaped serious injury.

Rev. F. X. Branagau, a Catholic priest, died at Cambridge, Mass., on Tuesday.

Col. Abercromble, of the U. S. regular army, has been gazetted a Brigadier General.

The corner stone of a new Catholic institute at Cincinnati was laid on Sunday last.

Oh! where is the whir of the busy wheel, And the sound and the hum of the spindle and reel, And the bright red light From the anvil bright, As the broad-chested man slowly fashions his steel? And why is all still like the black-curtained pier-- But why, oh! yes, why comes that voice on our ear, "Nobody's hurt! Nobody's hurt?" Oh! where is the peace of the cottage home. Where comfort is sweeter than under the dome of the merchant price, With gay worldly Hats, To whose portal grim poverty never dare come? is that comfort all gone, and that peace all flown? And yet does there come, like a deathly moan, "Nobody's hurt! Nobody's hurt!" See! the auctioneer's flag hangs upon the loved door, And the merchants of gold roughly trample the floor, And the relies of old Are all handled and sold, And their sacredness flies with themselves evermore; While the half-stified sob and the heart-breaking sigh Are checked by the unfeeling purchaser' s cry-- "Nobody's hurt! Nobody's hurt!" And so, 'mid the crashes and wrecks of the time. When men are dashed down from positions sublime, When the poor man must die With despair in his eye. When men must have bread if they get it by crime; When in death-waking days, oh! why is that howl, Like the half-mattered rage of a grave-haunting ghoul, "Nobody's hurt! Nobody's hurt?" Oh! come, heartless man, tread the frequented street Of the vicious, the poor, where the scum of earth meet; In the garrets and holes, There are hundreds of souls, Whose footsteps are slow, but whose vengeance is fleet; And there, 'mid these hovels of flash and of dirt, By misery, by hunger, by grim death begirt-- "Somebody's hurt! Somebody's hurt." And look in that coffin, upon that pinched face, And in the chill'd lineaments endeavor to trace, In days that are past, Before poverty's blast, The remnants of beauty, and sweetness and grace; And gaze on that father, so haggard and thin, And look in that heart, so withered within-- "Somebody's hurt! Somebody's hurt." Then from the streets, from the vales, from the hills, Then from the rivers, and streamlets, and rills, From a nation of men, Determined again To rid their loved land from its burdensome ills, A cry shall arise like a clarion clear, Sounding loudly and shrill till it reaches his ear, "Somebody's hurt!--vengeance is near!" Wouldn't Unscrew any more.

--Captain Evans was an old navy veteran of sixty-seven years. He had lost an arm and an eye, years before, at Navarino, which last action settled his understanding, both legs being carried off by a chain-shot. Cork legs were coming into fashion. Captain Evans had a pair of the first quality made for him; he had a false arm and hand; into the latter he could screw a fork or a hook, as occasion required, and being gloved, the deficiency was not easily perceived. As increasing years rendered him infirm, his valet took advantage of him, so that he wrote to his brother, a Somerset shire squire, to send him up some tenant's son, as a body servant. "No matter how stupid, if he be honest and faithful," he wrote.

His brother was absent, and sent to his steward to select a lad. This the steward did, but merely mentioned that Captain Evans was infirm, not apprising the bumpkin of his new master's deficiencies, and sent them to London at once, where the captain lived.

At 10 at night be arrived, and was immediately shown to Captain Evans' sitting room,"What is your names?" "My name is John, zur." "Well, John, my rascally valet is absent again without leave; help me to bed, as it is late and then you can go down to your supper."

Adjourning to the bed-room, the old gentleman said:

"John, unscrew my leg."

"Zur?" said John.

"Unscrew my leg this way, see."

John did so, tremblingly.

"John, unscrew the other leg."

"Zur?" said John.

"Unscrew the other leg, sir"

John did so, now in a state of bewilderment.

"John, unscrew this arm."

Trembling still more, to the captain's great amusement, he obeyed.

"John, put this eye on the table."

John took it as if it would have bitten him.

"Now, John — no, I won't take the other eye out — lift me into bed."

This done, the waggish captain continued.

"John, beat up my pillow; it is uncomfortable"

It was done.

"Beat it up again, sir, it is quite hard."

Again John shook up the pillow.

"That won't do, John. I can't get my head comfortable, John, unscrew my head!"

"No, I'll unscrew no more;" and John fled from the room to the kitchen, swearing his master was the devil, taking himself to pieces like a clock.

A Snake Story.

--"During the Florida war," said the speaker,

"I was in the American army. One day I shouldered my gun, and went in pursuit of game. In passing through a swamp I saw something a few feet a head of me, lying upon the ground, which had every appearance of a log, it being some forty feet in length, and about one foot in diameter. So positive was I that it was nothing but a log, that I paid no attention to it; the fact is, I would have sworn before a Court of Justice that it was a log, and nothing else. You see I never heard of snakes growing to such huge dimensions, and the fact is. I never should have believed it if I had. Well, between me and the log, as I took it to be, was a miry place, which it was necessary for me to avoid, I therefore placed the butt of the gun on the ground ahead of me, and springing upon it, lit right on top of — what do you suppose?"

"A boa conatrictor," said one.

"No."

"An anaconda," said another.

"No,"

"What, then, could it have been?" asked a third,

"Just what I supposed it to be — a log," said the wag.

The French vintage

--The Moniteur Vinicole gives the following description of the prospects of the next vintage: "The appearance of the vineyards is at present magnificent. The vines are pushing forth buds, thanks to the warm weather we have experienced for some days. The mischief caused by the late frosts is not so serious as was at first apprehended. There is nothing more to be feared from frost, but there is much to dread from the couture and the oidium.--Precautions ought, consequently, to be forthwith adopted against these two new enemies." The Moniteur Vinicole recommends as a precaution against the coulure the removing of the extremity of the fruit-bearing bud some days previous to the blossoming.--Blowing sulphur on the vine stalks is at present admitted as efficacious against the oidium.

Queen Victoria.

--The rumors of the advancing pregnacy of her Majesty Queen Victoria, would seem to derive substance from the announcement of the Gazette de France, that "Dr. Schœlin has been sent for to London to attend a consuitation of French and German physicians on the state of the Queen's health, which it seems is such as to give rise to uneasiness. Another journal learns from Berlin that the Prince and Princess Royal, with the little Prince William, are going to visit London about the middle of July, the object being to "precure a salutary emotion for Queen Victoria," A parliamentary explanation is looked for in England.

Death of a celebrated opera singer.

--Intelligence was received in New York on Wednesday, of the death of Signor Amodio, the celebrated Italian opera singer. He died at sea, on a voyage from Venezuela to this country, of yellow fever, after forty-eight hours sickness, Signor Amodio was a great favorite, and will be remembered for his immense physical proportions, as well as for his excellent singing and acting.

The Queen of Spain.

--The Madrid Gazette announces that the Queen of Spain has sent the usual notice to all the Bishops of the Kingdom, mentioning that she has entered the last month of her pregnancy, and requesting them to have prayers offered up for her safe delivery--Lou. Dem.

The Boot and Shoe trade.

--The Boston Boot and Shoe Leather Reporter states that orders for goods are almost unheard of, and that none of the manufacturers are making boots and shoes in anticipation of an immediate call.

General Orders, No. 29.--The first Periodical Muster for the payment of the Virginia Volunteers will be made on the 30th of June, 1861.

Two copies of each muster-roll will be transmitted by the mustering officer, one to the Adjutant General's Office in the War Department, and the other to the Paymaster General of the Virginia Forces at Richmond, within three days after the muster.

The mustering officer will also send, forthwith, by mail, a summary statement of the strength of each Company mustered, and the name of the officer commanding the regiment to which it is attached.

General Order.

Having been assigned by his Excellency the Governor of the State, and Advisory Council, to the command, for the present, of such volunteers from Maryland as may offer their services, the undersigned advises immediate organization into companies of not less than fifty men, who will elect their own officers.

The certificates of election will be returned to the commanding officer, who will forthwith procure the proper commissions.

Each company will consist of one Captain, one First and one Second Lieutenant, four Sergeants, four Corporals, and at least forty-two privates.

It is earnestly recommended to the Maryland men that they lose no time in perfecting their organization. Inheriting as we do the name of the old "Maryland Line," let us imitate their virtues, and let the Maryland Line of to-day, as did the grand "Old Maryland Continentals" of 1776, set an example of loyalty, discipline and courage to be emulated but not surpassed by our brothers of the South.

the Duties Involved in Supplying the troops in the field with Small Arms, Field Artillery, and Ammunition therefor, requiring a division of labor, the following order is issued:

The Colonel of Ordnance of Virginia will continue to attend to the issue of arms, both Artillery, and Small Arms, belonging to this State, and to the manufacture of Field Carriages and Caissons.

The making up of all kinds of ammunition, including the manufacture of Percussion Caps and the issuing of the same, will be attended to by the Ordnance Department of the Southern Confederacy, for which purpose so much of the Ammunition as is now on hand at the Armory, and the present accommodation for further manufacture of Ammunition as is now appropriated for that purpose by this State, be turned over to the Confederate authorities during the continuance of the war.

The Colonel of Ordnance of Virginia will make the necessary arrangements to carry out the foregoing order. John Letcher.
